Chapter 19
Right Place At The Right Time
Author’s Note
A new chapter and a new side of Chuck begins to emerge. He’s searching for answers, pushing himself further than he realizes, and discovering that some things inside him may be harder to keep buried than he thought. And somewhere along the way, he might just find a way to reach Sarah.
Chapter 19
Piranha Awakens
Sarah, he needed to find her.
Chuck looked back at the computer. If this system had access to all these government networks and classified files, there had to be something buried inside it that could help him find her. Somewhere in all of this information had to be an answer.
He just had to find it.
That possibility changed everything.
Chuck quickly sat back down, his fingers returning to the keyboard. He navigated through the system again, searching deeper this time. He wasn’t looking for inventions or government secrets anymore.
He was looking for Sarah.
His fingers moved faster as he accessed the FBI databases. The information appeared almost immediately, and within moments he found what he was searching for.
Sarah Walker.
Her file appeared on the screen. Chuck stared at it. His excitement faded into confusion.
“Why does Sarah have a file?”
He leaned closer to the monitor, studying the information in front of him. The woman he cared about wasn’t just someone caught in a dangerous situation. She was already part of a world he was only beginning to understand.
Chuck stopped typing and leaned back in the chair, bringing his fingers up to rub his temples as he tried to process everything that was happening.
“This is getting bigger and bigger with every keystroke,” he whispered to himself.
Every answer he found seemed to create another dozen questions. The deeper he went, the more he realized this wasn’t just about his father, Sarah, or even the situation with Stavros. Somehow, all of these pieces were connected, and he was standing in the middle of something far larger than he had ever imagined.
Before continuing, Chuck sent a copy of Sarah’s file to his laptop, making sure it was encrypted before moving on. He knew this was something he would need to study carefully once he had a better understanding of everything else happening around him. There was too much information, too many unanswered questions, and he couldn’t afford to overlook anything.
He knew that he could do this on his own that he wouldn’t need his little friend that he locked away a couple years back.
Chuck remembered the first time his father had caught him hacking into a government system. Chuck had discovered a security weakness in one of their networks and, instead of simply moving on, he had slipped through the defenses and left a message pointing out the flaw. He hadn’t meant any harm. He had simply wanted them to know how easily someone could get inside their system without being detected.
His father hadn’t been angry because Chuck had broken the law. He had been frightened by how easily his son had gotten through the security and how little Chuck seemed to understand what could happen if the wrong people discovered what he was capable of.
His father had made him promise that whatever he was doing, he had to keep his abilities hidden from the government. If they ever discovered what he was capable of, they would most likely lock him away somewhere and he might never see the light of day again. Whatever happened, he had to keep that part of himself buried and never let it out again.
“Charles, this is more than a warning. It’s a fact.”
He had never forgotten those words.
Chuck could feel it now, that old familiar presence stirring somewhere deep inside him, trying to claw its way back to the surface. It wanted to help him. It wanted to take over and do what it had always done best.
But Chuck pushed it back. He had made a promise to his father, and for now, he intended to keep it. Still, there were secrets his father had kept from him, secrets he had apparently believed Chuck was better off never knowing. If Chuck wanted answers, he was going to have to find them himself.
He needed information, and he would do whatever he could to obtain it without relying on that old part of himself. He would search, investigate, and follow every lead he could find. But if he reached a wall he couldn’t get through, then he would have to decide just how far he was willing to go to get past it.
Chuck lowered his eyes, knowing there might come a time when he wouldn’t have a choice. For now, the Piranha would stay where it was, buried in the back of his mind. He had no intention of letting it take control again unless he absolutely needed it.
Or so Chuck thought.
“Sorry, Dad,” he whispered. “Sometimes the rules don’t play fair.”
Returning to the computer, Chuck continued searching through the FBI database, looking for anything that referenced witness-protection safe houses, surveillance sites, protected residences, or anything else that might give him a way to locate Sarah. He moved through the records quickly, following one reference after another until a pattern began to emerge. It took less than two minutes before he finally found something that made him stop.
Sarah’s current location.
The safe house.
Chuck’s heart immediately began beating faster. He leaned closer to the screen, excitement pushing aside the exhaustion that had been weighing on him. He had spent years breaking into systems that were never supposed to be accessible to him, but this was different. He was looking at something designed by the government to keep people hidden. He had always wondered what that kind of security actually looked like from the inside.
Now he was about to find out.
He dug deeper into the system, carefully tracing the network connections associated with the location. What he found made him grin.
“So that’s how they do it.”
The safe house wasn’t relying on a normal residential internet connection. The primary connection appeared to run through a tactical cellular router, something designed to use the cellular network as a secure communications backhaul. Chuck recognized the hardware almost immediately. A Semtech AirLink.
He stared at it for a moment, fascinated.
This was new territory.
The government wasn’t simply putting a router in a house and hoping nobody found it. They had built an entire communications system around the location, keeping the actual connection as inconspicuous as possible while giving the agents access to everything they needed.
Chuck’s fingers moved faster across the keyboard.
He slipped through the router’s security, bypassing protections that would have stopped almost anyone else. It wasn’t difficult for him. Not really. Years of hacking had taught him how to recognize the weaknesses hiding beneath layers of security, and once he found one, he knew exactly how to exploit it.
Still, there was something almost exhilarating about it. He had never been this far inside a government surveillance system before.
Following the network farther, Chuck discovered that the cellular router wasn’t the only piece of the puzzle. There were additional wireless links supporting the surveillance equipment around the house. Directional antennas allowed the system to establish a focused wireless connection between equipment without broadcasting a strong, obvious signal across the entire neighborhood.
Chuck’s eyes widened. Cameras. Listening equipment. Secure communications. Everything was designed to blend into the background.
The more he searched, the more fascinated he became. He wasn’t just looking for Sarah anymore. For the first time, he was getting a glimpse of how the government actually built and maintained a surveillance operation.
And he loved it.
Whatever equipment they had placed inside the house would have to be something ordinary enough not to attract attention. Nothing that looked like government hardware. Nothing that would make a neighbor wonder why an ordinary house suddenly had an NSA-grade communications system sitting in the living room.
The wireless network itself would probably be just as boring.
Chuck smiled.
If the house was surrounded by families, whoever had configured the network might have given it a completely forgettable name. Something like Jones_Family_WiFi. Nothing suspicious. Nothing memorable.
He started filtering the wireless connections surrounding the location, comparing signal characteristics and network identifiers against the surveillance system he had already traced. One by one, the possibilities disappeared until only one remained.
He had found the house. Chuck sat back for a second, staring at the screen.
“Got you.”
Then he noticed something else.
The wireless network was heavily secured. Not the kind of protection someone could bypass with a stolen password. This was WPA3-Enterprise, the sort of setup designed so that every authorized device had its own credentials or certificate rather than relying on a single password shared by everyone.
Chuck should have stopped there.
He hadn’t really grasped how far he had gone to get to this point, or how many lines he had already crossed. He wasn’t thinking about the consequences if he were caught. At the moment, none of that mattered. He had a problem to solve, and his mind was completely focused on solving it.
Chuck didn’t realize it, but something inside him had begun slipping through the bars of its hidden cage. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the Piranha was finding its way out. It didn’t announce itself or demand his attention. It simply began making its presence known, moving beneath Chuck’s thoughts without him realizing it was there.
It was already working, searching through the layers of information in front of him, following connections Chuck hadn’t consciously noticed and finding paths he hadn’t known existed. Chuck thought he was doing it all himself.
He had no idea the Piranha had already begun to awaken.
Instead, he grinned.
“Nice.”
His fingers went back to work.
A few seconds later, the security that had been keeping him out was no longer keeping him out.
Chuck felt a small rush of satisfaction. He had spent years being told there were systems he wasn’t supposed to touch, but now he was discovering just how many doors could be opened when you knew where to look. What he didn’t realize was that something else was quietly helping him find those doors, slipping past barriers and recognizing connections before Chuck even knew they were there.
To Chuck, it was simply another problem he had solved on his own.
Curiosity took over again. He examined the access point and began cataloguing the devices connected to it. There were three computers. Two belonged to agents. The third stopped him cold.
Sarah.
Chuck stared at the screen.
“Sarah has internet access?”
That hadn’t been what he expected. A secure location protecting someone as important as Sarah should have had limited access, perhaps even a completely isolated network. Instead, her computer was connected to the house’s secure system and had access to the outside world.
It seemed strange. Very strange. Chuck hesitated, his fingers resting above the keyboard. Then his curiosity won.
He opened Sarah’s connection.
He accessed the laptop and carefully opened the camera feed. At first, all he could see was part of a chair and the hallway behind it. He recognized the layout almost immediately. It was the same hallway where the bedrooms and bathroom were located.
Chuck adjusted the view, studying the room. The computer appeared to be set up in the dining area. He switched the camera angle and slowly scanned the rest of the main room.
Then he saw her.
Sarah was sitting at the table, looking through a stack of books and manuals that had been placed beside the computer.
For a moment, Chuck forgot about everything else. His heart sank and lifted at the same time.
She had changed her hair colour, and it looked like it had been cut into a style that suited her even better than before. Chuck stared at the screen for a long moment, barely breathing as he watched her turn a page.
“Is it possible for you to be even more beautiful than you were when I left?” he whispered to himself.
He found himself wishing he could reach through the screen, hold her, and simply look into her eyes. He wanted her to understand what he couldn’t put into words, to somehow feel everything he was feeling without him having to say a single thing. He missed her more than he wanted to admit.
Chuck swallowed hard, his eyes never leaving the screen.
“My God, she’s beautiful.”
Seeing her there, knowing she was safe, brought Chuck a relief he hadn’t realized he needed. For the first time since leaving her, the tightness in his chest eased slightly. He stayed focused on the screen, watching her move around the room and trying to memorize every detail he could.
He reached toward the monitor without thinking, his fingers stopping just short of the glass.
“Sarah,” he whispered.
For a moment, the distance between them didn’t seem quite so impossible. He was still sitting alone in front of a computer, but watching her made him feel as though he had been given a small piece of her back.
Then a thought crossed his mind.
I wonder if Sarah knows how much I miss her.
He knew it was a ridiculous thought. Of course she knew he missed her. At least he hoped she did. But another thought quickly followed.
I wonder if she’s still thinking about me the same way I’m thinking about her.
They were simple questions, maybe even silly ones, but he couldn’t push them away. Being separated from her had created a strange emptiness inside him, one that he hadn’t expected to feel so strongly.
He needed to find a way to communicate with her.
Not just send a message through the proper channels and hope it reached her. He needed a way to contact Sarah without anyone else knowing, without putting her at risk, and without exposing what he had discovered.
Chuck returned his attention to the computer and began working. The small Intersect file at the bottom of the screen seemed to stare back at him, but he decided to ignore it.
His fingers moved quickly across the keyboard as he searched through the system. He eventually found a hidden access point, a back door that could only be activated through facial recognition. It was exactly the kind of security measure his father would create, something designed to make sure only the right person could gain access.
After activating the connection, Chuck typed out a short message.
Nothing that would put Sarah in danger.
Nothing that would reveal too much.
Just enough to let her know that he was trying to reach her.
He included a time for the following day, hoping she would see it when she was alone and that no one else would notice. He read the message one final time before sending it, silently hoping it would work.
When he was finished, Chuck carefully restored Sarah’s computer back to its original settings. He didn’t want anything to look out of place or give anyone a reason to investigate.
He pushed himself away from the console and let his hands fall to his sides. Looking up at the ceiling, he released a long breath.
“Okay, Chuck,” he whispered. “You actually did something useful.”
For a brief moment, he allowed himself to enjoy the small victory.
Chuck’s talent really showing up now. He also now fully understands how important Sarah is to him. Things really picking up
A secret message. How exciting. I wonder when she will get it.
