Chapter 20

The Proof

Chuck knew he wasn’t finished yet. He still needed to uncover what the Demetrios family was hiding. More importantly, he had to find enough evidence to hand over to the FBI, enough to ensure they could finally arrest Yari Demetrious and bring down his entire operation.

Chuck’s fingers flew across the keyboard as windows flashed across the monitor faster than most people could have followed. He scanned each one as it appeared, quickly dismissing anything that wasn’t relevant. There was a tremendous amount of information buried in the system, but none of it was what he was looking for.

If Yari Demetrios was hiding something, he wasn’t going to make it easy to find. Neither would his accountants. If Yari’s computer came up clean, Chuck would have to move on to the accountants’ records or look for another source. But he wasn’t ready to give up on this computer yet.

Sarah and her friends had broken into Yari’s home and taken records from this very machine. That meant the information had been here. Either Yari had moved the files somewhere else after the break-in, or they were still buried somewhere inside the system, hidden well enough that Chuck hadn’t found them yet.

Chuck paused and looked more closely at the screen. Something about the computer’s configuration caught his attention. Yari’s machine was connected to several other computers within the Demetrious organization, and information was moving between them. Chuck followed the connections for a moment, realizing that he might have been making the wrong assumption.

Maybe Yari’s computer wasn’t where everything was stored.

Maybe it was simply one computer on a much larger network.

He had already exhausted most of the obvious places to look. Whatever remained, if anything, wasn’t going to be sitting in a folder with Yari’s name on it. Chuck leaned back and stared at the screen, thinking about where the information could have gone.

Then he smiled slightly and returned his attention to the keyboard.

He wasn’t done looking.

He kept digging.

At first, all he found were the kinds of files every international import and export company should have. Shipping manifests. Customs declarations. Bills of lading. Purchase orders. Insurance certificates. Everything appeared legitimate. Everything balanced. Nothing stood out.

Chuck frowned.

What had Mikey stumbled across that had Yari so desperate to get it back? So far, there was nothing worth killing over. Maybe Mikey had simply wandered into the system and accidentally triggered an alert. Maybe he’d found embarrassing personal photos that would destroy Yari’s marriage. Whatever it was, Chuck hadn’t found it yet.

He continued searching, filtering through thousands of directories, looking for hidden tags, encrypted folders, and anything that didn’t belong.

Then he saw it.

A section of the directory that didn’t make sense. The files were gone, but the entries showing that they had existed were still there. Dates, file sizes, and fragments of filenames remained in places they shouldn’t have, as if someone had tried to erase the evidence without completely understanding what the system would leave behind.

Chuck stared at the screen for several seconds.

He had been hoping he wouldn’t have to do this.

But whoever had erased these files had left enough behind for him to follow, and Chuck knew exactly what he needed to become if he wanted to find them.

Piranha.

The skill was already inside him. He had simply been holding it back.

Chuck leaned toward the keyboard, his fingers moving faster as he began tearing through the system. Screens filled with directories, files, and fragments of information, each one appearing and disappearing almost faster than he could read them. He followed one connection into another, then another, dismantling the system piece by piece as he searched for whatever had been hidden from him.

Piranha was at the forefront of Chuck’s mind now, and there was no hesitation left in him. He knew what he was looking for, and his instincts took over. File after file flashed across the screens as he pushed deeper into the network, following every trace the system gave him.

He had hoped he wouldn’t have to use this part of himself.

Now he was glad he had it.

Chuck leaned closer to the screen. Someone had gone through this computer and deliberately removed a large number of files. Not recently, either. The timestamps showed that the deletions had happened after the break-in.

He hadn’t found the files yet, but he had found something almost as important.

Someone had tried very hard to make sure he wouldn’t.

Buried beneath several layers of archived directories was a simple URL that most people would have overlooked. His fingers froze over the keyboard.

“Come on…”

He clicked it.

A short list appeared on the screen.

Q3_Freight_Adjustments.xlsxVendor_Reconciliation_Final.xlsmSpecial_Handling_Accounts.accdbTransit_Exception_Log_2026.csvConsulting_Payments_APAC.pdfArchive_Operations_OLD.zipDRP_Evacuation_Protocol.docx

Chuck smiled.

“Nice try.”

The file names were designed to look painfully ordinary, the kind of accounting documents no investigator would waste time opening. Whoever had created them was counting on anyone searching the system to see nothing worth investigating.

But Chuck opened them anyway.

The files led to a second encrypted directory that told a very different story.

Thousands of shipping records revealed containers repeatedly traveling through the same free-trade zones before quietly disappearing into ports with minimal customs inspections. Bills of lading didn’t match customs declarations. Cargo weights changed from one document to the next, while shipments insured for millions of dollars were described as inexpensive machine parts or agricultural equipment.

Buried among them were records that made Chuck stop. The descriptions were deliberately vague, but the routes, weights, and handling companies suggested Yari was moving illegal weapons through the same network.

The financial records were even worse.

Two sets of books tracked the company’s business. One showed what Yari wanted the government to see. The other recorded the actual value of the shipments. Money moved through shell companies before disappearing into offshore accounts, while dozens of corporations scattered across nearly thirty countries shared the same contact information and legal representatives.

It wasn’t a collection of independent businesses.

It was one organization hiding behind dozens of identities.

Chuck kept scrolling, following one record to another. The deeper he went, the clearer the pattern became. Shipping records, financial transfers, warehouse inventories, and encrypted communications all pointed back to the same operation.

Chuck leaned back slowly, his eyes fixed on the monitor. What had looked like an ordinary import and export company was nothing more than a carefully constructed front.

He continued working through the shipping records, following one entry after another until he came across a separate delivery calendar. He paused and looked closer. Unlike the other records, this one tracked incoming shipments, their expected arrival dates at the shipping yard, the dates they were scheduled to leave, and the destinations they were ultimately being sent to.

Chuck scanned the entries, then stopped.

These weren’t machine parts or agricultural equipment. The records identified weapons shipments being sold to a terrorist organization operating in Central America.

More importantly, the schedule gave him exactly what he needed. He had the dates the shipments would arrive at the port, the dates they were scheduled to leave, and the locations where they would ultimately be delivered.

Chuck stared at the screen.

This was it.

He didn’t need to find every account, every shell company, or every person connected to Yari Demetrios. This schedule gave the FBI something they could act on immediately. If the information was accurate, they could be waiting at the port when the next shipment arrived and follow it all the way back through Yari’s organization.

For the first time since he had started digging, Chuck wasn’t looking at another piece of the puzzle.

He had found the smoking gun.

If everything he had found was legitimate, it should be enough to make Sarah safe again. It should be enough to put Yari, Stavros, and everyone involved behind bars for a very long time.

At least, that was what he hoped.

He didn’t know much about the legal system. Maybe what he had uncovered was enough. Maybe investigators would still need something more, a final piece of undeniable proof, the proverbial smoking gun that tied everything together beyond question.

He gathered everything he had collected into a secure email and sent it to an emergency account he had maintained for years, one known only to a handful of trusted people. It was his insurance policy. If anything happened to him, the evidence wouldn’t disappear with him.

The moment he clicked Send, a strange sense of relief washed over him.

He felt as though he had finally done something that might actually help Sarah.

As his breathing slowly settled, his attention drifted back across the laboratory.

His eyes locked onto the hidden doorway beside the main computer once again.

Whatever lay beyond it was the last unanswered question in the room.

And now…

He needed to know.

Chuck leaned forward and began typing again. His fingers moved across the keys as he searched through the system until he found the command he was looking for.

The answer was almost disappointingly simple.

He pressed the enter key.

A soft mechanical sound echoed through the room as the hidden door slid open with a quiet swish.

Chuck stared at it, shaking his head slowly.

He still couldn’t understand how any of this was possible.

His father had built a hidden laboratory beneath their house, created technology beyond anything Chuck had ever imagined, and somehow had kept an entire secret life hidden from everyone.

Including him.

Chuck turned away from the computer and headed toward the newly opened doorway. The lights inside the room had just finished activating, slowly illuminating the space beyond.

He stopped at the entrance, taking in what he was seeing.

The room was unlike anything he had ever encountered. Smooth white panels covered the walls, all facing toward the center of the room where a long chair sat waiting. It looked almost like a futuristic recliner, something that belonged in a science fiction movie rather than hidden beneath his childhood home.

Chuck stepped inside cautiously, his eyes moving from one side of the room to the other.

There were no obvious controls on the walls. No monitors. No keyboards. No visible technology that explained what the room was designed to do.

As he moved closer to the chair, he noticed several small buttons built into the armrest.

He stared at them for a moment.

“Definitely a James Bond movie,” he muttered to himself, shaking his head in disbelief.

The more he explored his father’s hidden world, the more unreal everything seemed. A secret laboratory, classified government information, a supercomputer, and now a room that looked like it belonged in a spy headquarters.

Chuck eventually stepped back out and returned to the main laboratory. As he moved around the room, something caught his attention near the holographic imaging computer, he noticed a piece of paper partially tucked beneath the edge of another keyboard, with writing in red ink. He picked it up and immediately recognized his father’s handwriting.

The note explained that there was a small manual beside the keyboard that Chuck needed to read. His father had also made it clear that nothing was to be removed from the laboratory. Everything needed to remain exactly where it was.

Chuck thought about the files he still had with him. He knew his father had specifically told him to leave everything behind, but he had decided that these files were important enough to make an exception. He still had Sarah’s file notes, and he needed to know more about her. He was hoping the information in her file might give him some clue about who she really was and what had brought her into his life.

The Demetrios files were just as important for a different reason. They contained information that could help the FBI build its case against the organization, and Chuck believed the information could also help protect Sarah.

He knew he was going against his father’s instructions by taking the files, but he had made his decision. Some things were simply too important to leave behind.

He also read that he was welcome to return whenever he wanted and continue working with the equipment at his own pace. The laboratory was his now, and his father wanted him to know that he could come back anytime he wanted and use it however he saw fit.

Chuck read those words again. Something about the way his father had written them bothered him. It sounded almost like a goodbye, as though his father wasn’t certain he would be around for Chuck to come back and see him again.

Chuck tried to push the thought aside, but the feeling wouldn’t leave him. Whatever his father had gotten himself involved in, Chuck was beginning to wonder just how dangerous it might have become.

He looked around the laboratory, suddenly seeing it differently. His father hadn’t simply left him a place to work. He had left him something that felt like a warning, even if he had never actually said the words.

Chuck placed the note back on the table and looked around the room one more time.

As fascinating as all of this was, he had something more important to deal with.

He still needed to contact his mother.

Finding out the truth about his father’s secret room could wait. Right now, he needed answers about Sarah. He needed to understand what the FBI’s involvement was, why Sarah had a file, and how all of this connected to the mysterious agent who had been watching them.

He needed to understand what Sarah knew about the Demetrios family, what they wanted from her, and why they had gone to such lengths to find her.

His mother would be able to get him answers. At least, that was what Chuck hoped.

He slowly made his way back toward the small elevator, still trying to process everything he had discovered beneath his childhood home. The hidden room, the classified information, the secrets his father had kept from him for years, it was almost too much to take in all at once.

What Chuck didn’t realize was how much time had passed while he had been exploring.

He had been down there for almost 2 hours.

As the elevator carried him back toward the house, he wondered if Ellie was still there or if she had already left. He had completely lost track of time, and he wasn’t sure what he was going to say if she was still waiting for him.

When the elevator doors opened, Chuck stepped out and immediately noticed the difference.

It was already dusk outside.

He walked away from the hidden entrance as the door behind him closed automatically with a quiet mechanical sound. Chuck moved the workbench back into its original position, making sure everything looked exactly as it had before.

He reached into his pocket and felt the folded note his father had left for him. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do with everything he had learned, but he knew he needed to keep it safe for now.

Chuck opened the door leading back into the house and stepped inside.

The home was dark and quiet.

“Ellie? I’m leaving. Are you still here?”

There was no response.

After waiting a moment, Chuck slowly walked into the main living area and made his way into the kitchen. He opened the refrigerator and grabbed a small bottle of apple juice, finishing it in just a few seconds. He let out a satisfied breath as the cool drink helped clear his dry throat.

Turning toward the counter, he noticed a bowl containing a few granola bars and an apple. He grabbed a couple of the bars and the apple, knowing he hadn’t eaten anything in hours and that he needed something to keep him going.

Chuck walked back toward the front door, stepped into the yard, and looked over the house, trying to imagine how the laboratory was positioned beneath it. He walked around toward the back of the property and studied the surroundings.

The large two-car garage was part of his parents’ house, something he’d seen countless times growing up. Farther back stood a small brick structure that had always been there as well. Chuck had never given it much thought. It looked like some kind of phone company maintenance building, and the door leading inside had never seemed worth wondering about.

But now he found himself looking at it differently.

What if it wasn’t just a maintenance building?

Could that be another way into the laboratory?

Chuck studied the building for several moments, his eyes moving over the structure and the door. The more he thought about it, the less he liked the possibility that he had overlooked something so obvious for all these years. His father had gone to great lengths to keep the laboratory hidden, and Chuck was beginning to realize that there might be more to the property than he had ever known.

He considered walking over and taking a closer look, but something told him that now wasn’t the time. He didn’t know what was inside that building, and after everything he had just discovered, he wasn’t about to walk into another mystery without knowing what he was dealing with.

Chuck looked at the building one last time, committing its location to memory, then climbed into his car.

The thought stayed with him as he drove away.

As he drove away from his childhood home, his thoughts were already turning toward his next steps.

He needed to call his mother. Hopefully, she would answer. Hopefully, she would finally give him some of the information he needed. Because whatever was happening with Sarah, the FBI, and everything surrounding his father’s secrets, Chuck knew one thing for certain.

He needed answers, and he needed them soon.

But there was something else he couldn’t ignore. The information he had uncovered about the Demetrios family was too important to keep to himself. The FBI needed to know what he had found, and Director Graham needed to see it. Chuck wasn’t sure yet how he was going to get the information to them safely, but he would find a way.

There was too much at stake now. Sarah needed help, the FBI needed the evidence, Chuck needed answers about his father, and he still needed to find his mother.

Somehow, he was going to have to deal with all four.
