Right Place At The Right Time

Chapter 8

A/N: As Sarah begins receiving training and an education, she slowly starts to learn what it means to trust other people. She finds a friend in the most unlikely place, someone who wants to help her rather than use her. Meanwhile, the FBI has plans to accelerate the investigation, while Graham has an agenda for Sarah’s future that she has yet to discover.

Hope

Sarah was doing everything she could to create some sense of a normal life. Instead, she felt trapped inside a house surrounded by federal agents with no personalities. With every passing hour, the walls seemed to close in a little more, making the house feel less like a place of protection and more like a prison. She would have been lying to herself if she claimed Chuck was not constantly on her mind. There were very few reminders of him in the house, yet his face seemed to appear before her eyes every few minutes. She barely knew him and knew almost nothing about his life, but none of that seemed to matter. All she wanted was to be with him again. It amazed her that in only a couple of days Chuck Bartowski had become one of the most important people she had ever met, and the only person who had made her feel truly safe.

She tried to fill her time with anything she could find. She wandered from room to room, desperately trying to keep herself from going stir crazy inside what she had begun calling her cardboard jail. She was now into her second day without Chuck, and every minute seemed to pass more slowly than the last. No matter how hard she tried to distract herself, she could not stop thinking about him. She hated admitting it, even to herself, but his presence had become the one thing that kept the anxiety, fear, and loneliness from overwhelming her.

Instead, she withdrew into herself. Whenever one of the agents tried to strike up a conversation or casually slipped in another question, hoping for a different answer than the ones she had already given, Sarah responded with as few words as possible. She had already told them everything she knew. Every time she asked questions about her own situation or what was happening outside the house, her questions were either ignored completely or answered with carefully worded responses so vague that they revealed nothing. That frustration only deepened her feeling that everyone knew exactly what was happening except her.

It had been two days since Director Graham had left, and she had not heard a single word from him since. She had no idea what was happening with the murders, whether the investigation had uncovered anything, or if Stavros and his family had become part of it. The silence was beginning to wear on her. Every unanswered question only fueled her frustration, making her feel even more isolated from the world outside.

She searched for something, anything, that would occupy her mind. It had to be useful, something constructive that would keep her from sitting there staring at walls and ceilings while thinking about Chuck. Her eyes drifted over to Natalie, who was sitting at the dining room table reading through what looked like a stack of files. Sarah had no idea if the woman was actually working or if this was simply how FBI agents spent their downtime, but she decided to ask anyway.

“Natalie, is there any chance a heavy bag could be installed downstairs in the basement? I wouldn’t mind learning how to fight. After everything I’ve seen over the last couple of days, I think it would be pretty important to learn some self defense, or at least how to throw a punch.”

Natalie looked up from the papers in front of her and could not help but smile.

“I completely understand what you’re saying, Sarah, and I think that’s a very reasonable request. Tell you what, let me make a few phone calls and see if I can get something arranged for you today.”

Sarah blinked in surprise. She had expected resistance or another polite excuse. Instead, Natalie had responded almost immediately, and for the first time since arriving at the house, Sarah felt as though someone had actually listened to what she wanted.

“That would be so awesome, Natalie. Thank you. And could you maybe get me some books on how to fight? Books on self defense, boxing, or martial arts? Anything that can teach me the basics. I just need something to work on.”

“I can do that too, Sarah,” Natalie replied with a nod.

Sarah smiled for what felt like the first time that day. “I’d also like to learn how to hit, kick, gouge, and disable someone as quickly as possible… and then learn how to run.”

Natalie let out a quiet laugh.

“Running is actually a very good tactic, Sarah. Don’t ever underestimate it. If you can avoid a fight, you’ve already won.”

She was genuinely surprised by Sarah’s request, but she was also pleased by the determination she heard in the young woman’s voice. For the first time since arriving at the safe house, Sarah sounded motivated instead of defeated.

“If you’d like,” Natalie said with a small smile, “I’ve been training for years, and I know quite a few effective techniques. I’d be happy to teach you some of the basics myself. We can start with simple strikes, balance, and how to get away from someone who’s trying to grab you. Then, when all of this is behind you, you can enroll in a proper martial arts school and learn from experienced instructors.”

She leaned back in her chair before adding thoughtfully, “I honestly believe every woman should know how to defend herself. It shouldn’t be unusual in today’s world. It ought to be second nature. My goal has never been to teach people how to win fights. It’s to teach them how to survive one.”

Sarah stared at Natalie for a moment, slightly confused by her words, but she could also hear the sincerity behind them. There was no judgment in her voice, only a genuine desire to help. Sarah smiled and nodded. “That would be so nice of you, Natalie. Thank you.”

Natalie smiled back and returned the nod. “Let me see what I can do.”

For the first time that day, Sarah found herself genuinely interested in something. This was more than just another way to distract her mind. It was an opportunity to become stronger, to build confidence, and to make sure she would never feel as helpless as she had a few days earlier. She had never considered herself a particularly physical person. In school she had run track, played soccer, and even enjoyed gymnastics, but she had never learned how to defend herself or how to fight back. Until now, she had never really seen the need. Everything she had witnessed over the past few days had changed that.

“I’ll have to find you some suitable workout clothes,” Natalie said as she stood up. “I’ll also bring over some of my own training gear. It’ll be fun, Sarah. We can work out together, maybe first thing every morning.”

Natalie could see the excitement spreading across Sarah’s face. It was the first genuine enthusiasm she had seen from her since arriving at the safe house. Strangely enough, Natalie found herself looking forward to it as well. She barely knew this young woman, but she could already see a quiet determination growing inside her. It was something worth encouraging, and if she could help shape that determination into confidence, then perhaps Sarah would walk away from all of this stronger than she had ever imagined possible.

“This will be good for both of us,” Natalie said with an encouraging smile. “I was beginning to think I was going to spend my days sitting around here getting out of shape. This will help keep me motivated and give me a reason to stay on top of my own workouts.”

She laughed softly before continuing.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, Sarah, but when I got this assignment I was worried I was going to be babysitting some spoiled teenager who didn’t want to be here and would spend every day complaining. I can see now that you’re not that person. I’m actually looking forward to spending time with you and teaching you a few things. This just isn’t the kind of assignment I normally get. At my age, they start taking you out of the field more often and sticking you behind a desk. At least this gets me out of the office for a while, and who knows, maybe I’ll even make a new friend.”

Sarah smiled warmly.

“Well, it sounds like you helping me is actually me helping you too.”

Natalie’s smile widened.

“That sounds like a pretty good partnership to me, Sarah.”

Sarah appreciated Natalie’s honesty. It made her feel just a little closer to the woman and, in some small way, a little less isolated from the agency that had turned her life upside down. Deep down, she still didn’t truly trust anyone except Chuck, but for the first time since arriving at the safe house, she felt as though someone was beginning to earn that trust.

Sarah hesitated for a moment before asking the question that had been on her mind ever since she had arrived.

“Have you heard anything about Chuck lately? I’m really worried about him.”

Natalie nodded reassuringly. “I know he’s back in Los Angeles. I also know there’s an agent assigned to watch over him, although he doesn’t know it. He’s got a shadow keeping an eye on him.”

Sarah’s eyes widened in surprise. “Really? You guys can do that?”

Natalie smiled. “We’re the FBI, Sarah. It’s our job to protect American citizens. As far as we’re concerned, Mr. Bartowski is a person of interest in an active investigation. We have to be prepared for the possibility that whoever murdered those four people could decide to come after him as well. Until we know exactly what’s going on, we’d rather be cautious than regret not acting.”

Sarah let out a slow breath. Hearing that Chuck was at least being watched over eased some of the worry that had been weighing on her.

“What would it take for someone like me to work for the FBI someday?” she asked quietly. “Would my past be a problem?”

Natalie thought about the question before answering.

“I’m not familiar enough with your past to say for certain, Sarah, but if there isn’t anything serious that would disqualify you, there’s always a possibility. People have overcome difficult childhoods before. I do know that Assistant Director Graham seems to have taken an interest in you. The next time you see him, you should ask him about it. He’d be the person who could give you a real answer.”

Sarah nodded thoughtfully. The idea stayed with her for only a moment before another one came to mind.

“What are the chances of getting some books or online classes while I’m here? I’d like to study languages too. Maybe even start taking some college level courses if that’s possible.”

Natalie smiled again, pleased to see Sarah thinking about her future instead of dwelling on her past.

“You tell me which languages interest you and what subjects you’d like to study, and I’ll do everything I can to get the materials. If we’re going to be spending time here, we might as well make it productive.”

“Really?” Sarah asked, her voice softening.

She could feel herself becoming emotional. She could hardly believe that someone was willing to help her this much after everything she had been through, especially someone from the FBI. Growing up, people wearing badges had never represented safety. They had always been someone to avoid, someone her parents warned her about. Yet here was Natalie offering to teach her, encourage her, and help her build a future.

She could not understand why anyone would go so far out of their way for her. Deep down, she still carried the weight of everything she had done while following her parents. Whether she had intended to or not, she believed she had crossed lines that could easily make her a criminal in the eyes of the law. It was difficult for her to believe she deserved the kindness Natalie was showing her.

“I think I’m going to head downstairs and spend a little time in the gym,” Sarah said quietly. “I need to burn off some of this energy.”

“I think that’s a good idea,” Natalie replied with an encouraging smile.

While Sarah pushed herself through a grueling workout, pouring every ounce of frustration, fear, and uncertainty into the exercise equipment, Natalie remained upstairs making a series of phone calls. She contacted the field office and requested everything Sarah had asked for, including language courses, college level study materials, books on self defense, and basic martial arts instruction.

After speaking with the lead agent, Natalie learned that most of the requests could be arranged. The heavy bag, however, would have to wait. Sarah was expected to be relocated to a new safe house in Los Angeles within the next few days, and it made more sense to install it there rather than in a house she would soon be leaving.

Before ending the call, the lead agent lowered his voice and shared one final piece of information.

“There is a possibility we’re going to let Sarah move around with limited freedom,” he said. “The hope is that it may draw whoever carried out those murders into the open. Right now it’s only being discussed, and nothing has been approved. This information is strictly need to know. Sarah is not to hear about it.”

Natalie acknowledged the order without question. She understood the reasoning, but she also knew how dangerous such a plan could become. As she hung up the phone, her thoughts immediately turned to the young woman downstairs, who was unknowingly trying to rebuild her life one workout at a time.

Natalie sat quietly for a moment after the call ended, surprised by the new information she had just received. More than anything, she found herself worried about the young woman downstairs. She could not understand why anyone would consider using Sarah as bait against people who had already shown they had no hesitation about murdering others in cold blood. The strategy might make sense on paper, but to Natalie it came with an enormous human cost.

“I understand,” she told her supervisor. “Please keep me informed about the next steps.”

After ending that call, she was transferred to the Bureau’s training and education department. A woman answered almost immediately, and Natalie explained everything Sarah had requested, including language courses, introductory college level textbooks, and self defense materials. The woman listened carefully, took a few notes, and after a brief pause assured her that everything would be assembled and sent by courier within the hour.

“Thank you,” Natalie replied before hanging up.

She set the phone down on the table and slowly tapped her fingers against its back, deep in thought. For the last couple of days she had been Natalie, a friendly face trying to make a frightened young woman feel safe. Now, however, Agent Spears had taken over. She had been given new information that changed the nature of her assignment.

If Sarah was going to be moved and potentially placed in a situation that could expose her to the people responsible for the murders, Natalie already knew what she was going to ask for. She intended to request that she remain assigned to Sarah’s protective detail for the remainder of the investigation. She had only known the young woman a short time, but she had no intention of leaving her safety in someone else’s hands.

Several hours later, Natalie received a call from one of the agents stationed outside in an unmarked vehicle.

“Agent Spears, there’s a courier out here with a package addressed to you and your charge. Were you expecting something, or should I send him away?”

Natalie immediately remembered the conversation she had just had with the training department.

“Get some identification from him first. He should be with the Bureau. If everything checks out, take the package from him and bring both him and the package into the house.”

“Understood, Agent Spears.”

A few minutes later there was a knock at the door. The courier was exactly who Natalie had been expecting. He was one of the Bureau’s technical support agents and produced the proper identification before stepping inside carrying several large boxes.

“Looks like they didn’t waste any time,” Natalie said with an approving smile.

“They wanted your trainee up and running as soon as possible,” the technician replied.

After setting the boxes on the dining room table, he unpacked the equipment and explained that he first needed access to Sarah’s laptop. Natalie led him over to it, and within minutes he had established a secure wireless connection. Once everything was verified, he began downloading the requested language programs, educational software, and training materials while the progress bars slowly filled across the screen.

As the downloads continued, Natalie opened the remaining boxes and began laying out the hard copy materials across the table. There were introductory college textbooks, language workbooks, dictionaries, self defense manuals, physical fitness guides, and several training publications used to prepare new FBI recruits for the academic portion of their instruction.

Sarah stared at the growing pile with wide eyes. She looked like a child who had just been handed the greatest gift imaginable. She eagerly picked up one book after another, flipping through the pages before setting it aside to examine the next. Every manual, workbook, and training guide seemed to open another door into a world she had never imagined she might someday be part of.

She had no idea just how valuable the material spread out before her really was. What the Bureau had provided represented months of structured training and education, resources that very few people outside the FBI ever had the opportunity to see. To Sarah, however, they were something even more important. For the first time in her life, someone had invested in her future instead of trying to use her past.

For some reason, there were even more books and training materials in the shipment than Natalie had requested. She paused as she unpacked another stack of manuals, realizing several of them had nothing to do with the language courses, self defense guides, or introductory educational material she had asked for. There were additional textbooks covering investigative procedures, criminal law, behavioral analysis, evidence collection, and other subjects that seemed far beyond the basics.

Natalie frowned thoughtfully. She knew she had not requested any of those materials.

Unknown to her at the time, after speaking with the Bureau’s training and education department, she had briefed Assistant Director Graham on Sarah’s requests. Graham had quietly contacted the department himself and instructed them to include additional FBI educational materials with the shipment. He wanted Sarah to have every opportunity to learn while she remained under Bureau protection.

As Natalie sat watching Sarah excitedly flip through her new books and manuals, her phone rang.

She glanced at the display before answering.

“Agent Spears.”

Within seconds she recognized the voice on the other end.

“Director Graham.”

“I assume the package arrived,” Graham said.

“Yes, sir. It did. Although I have to admit there are quite a few materials here that I never requested.”

“You weren’t supposed to,” Graham replied. “I asked the training department to include them. I’d appreciate it if you kept that between the two of us.”

Natalie looked across the room at Sarah, who was completely absorbed in a language workbook, smiling to herself as she turned each page.

“I understand, sir.”

“I’m putting you in charge of Sarah’s educational development while she’s under our protection,” Graham continued. “If she’s interested in learning about the Bureau, I want you to encourage it. Give her every opportunity you can.”

Natalie smiled slightly.

“Actually, sir, she asked me earlier today if someone with her background could ever work for the FBI. She also asked about taking college courses and studying languages.”

Although Natalie could not see him, she could hear the satisfaction in Graham’s voice.

“That doesn’t surprise me,” he replied. “Keep nurturing that curiosity. Right now she needs a purpose, and education may be exactly what gives her one.”

The two spoke for several more minutes, discussing Sarah’s progress over the past two days. Before ending the call, Graham informed Natalie that Sarah would most likely be transferred to Los Angeles within the next several days and reminded her that the details of the move were still confidential.

Natalie took the opportunity to ask the question that had been on her mind since receiving the earlier briefing.

“Sir, would it be possible for me to transfer to the Los Angeles Field Office and remain on Sarah’s protective detail?”

There was only a brief pause before Graham answered.

“ The paperwork has already been filed. Begin tying up any loose ends in San Diego because, if everything goes as planned, you’ll be relocating before next week.”

Natalie could not hide the smile that spread across her face.

“Thank you, sir. I appreciate it.”

After wishing her good luck, Graham ended the call.

Natalie slipped her phone back into her pocket and looked over at Sarah once more. The young woman was still completely captivated by the mountain of books spread across the table, unaware that someone at the highest levels of the Bureau had quietly begun investing in her future.

After ending the call, the house grew quiet again. The technician had finished setting up the laptop and departed, leaving Natalie and Sarah alone with the mountain of books and training materials spread across the table.

Natalie walked over and sat beside Sarah.

“I should probably tell you something,” she began. “Assistant Director Graham asked me to oversee your educational training while you’re under our protection. He wants me to help you with the language courses, the study material, and anything else you want to learn.”

Sarah slowly lowered the book she had been reading.

“He… asked you to do that?”

Natalie nodded.

“He did.”

Sarah sat silently for several moments, trying to process everything. The pace at which her life was changing was almost overwhelming. Just a few days earlier she had been running from one con to the next. Now the FBI was protecting her, providing her with an education, and apparently taking a personal interest in her future.

A dozen questions flooded her mind.

Are they really interested in me? Do they actually think I could work for the FBI someday?

Her thoughts immediately shifted to Chuck.

What about Chuck? Would they want him too? Would he even want to work for the FBI?

The more she thought about it, the more one thing became painfully clear.

She had to talk to Chuck.

Before she even realized she was speaking, the words burst from her mouth.

“I need to talk to Chuck.”

Natalie looked at her sympathetically but remained silent.

“You’ve got to find a way for me to speak to him,” Sarah pleaded. “Please, Natalie. I’m begging you. If you can’t do that, then let me speak to Mr. Graham. I just… I need to talk to Chuck.”

“This is important to me, Natalie.”

Natalie reached across the table and gently took both of Sarah’s hands, the way one woman comforts another who is struggling to hold herself together. Her voice was soft and reassuring.

“I’ll do everything I can for you, Sarah. Let’s just take this one step at a time, okay?”

Sarah never looked away. She stared into Natalie’s eyes, silently pleading with her as tears slowly began to gather along the edges of her own. For a long moment neither of them spoke. Then Sarah gently slipped her hands free and looked back down at the stack of books spread across the table.

Without another word, she threw herself into her studies.

In her mind, every page she read, every lesson she completed, and every new skill she learned was another step toward becoming someone Chuck would be proud of. From the very moment they had met, he had believed in her when no one else ever had. He had given her confidence she never knew she possessed and made her believe she was capable of accomplishing anything she truly set her mind to, and perhaps even more than that.

As she opened the first book and began reading, she made a silent promise to herself, and to Chuck.

She would never let that faith go to waste.

Sarah returned to the table where Natalie was finishing her paperwork and gathered all of the Russian study materials that had been brought for her. Opening the first textbook, she launched the language program on her laptop and immediately found herself fascinated by what she saw. At the same time, she realized just how difficult the journey ahead was going to be.

The lessons began with pronunciation, common words, verbs, nouns, sentence structure, and short conversational exercises. She carefully worked her way through each tutorial, repeating every word until she could pronounce it correctly. To her surprise, the sounds seemed to come naturally. It reminded her of how quickly she had picked up German years earlier, and now Russian appeared to be following the same pattern.

The grammar, however, was another matter entirely. The unfamiliar vocabulary challenged her at every turn, and the Cyrillic alphabet looked strange enough that it hardly seemed like a language at all. Even so, she refused to become discouraged. She pushed herself through one lesson after another, determined to master each new concept before moving on. Her perseverance carried her through the first several hours until it felt as though her brain might simply overload, yet she never once looked away from the computer screen.

As hard as she concentrated and as much effort as she poured into every lesson, one thought continually found its way back to the surface.

Chuck.

The man she had already begun to think of as her boyfriend remained at the center of her thoughts, quietly encouraging her even though he was hundreds of miles away. Every new word she learned and every sentence she managed to understand felt like one more step toward becoming the person she hoped he already believed she could be.

Exhaustion finally began to catch up with her. She rested her head beside the laptop, closed her eyes for a moment, and whispered a single word.

“Chuck.”

No matter how hard she tried to focus on her lessons, his smile, his warm brown eyes, his curly hair, and his gentle kindness always found their way back into her thoughts. Every memory of him reminded her just how much she already missed him. With a quiet sigh, she pushed herself away from the desk and stared off into space, allowing herself to drift into another daydream.

She imagined the two of them sitting together on a park bench with textbooks spread between them, practicing Russian, German, Spanish, and English. They would switch effortlessly from one language to another, laughing every time one of them mispronounced a word. She could almost hear Chuck trying to roll an “R” in Spanish or stumbling over a difficult Russian phrase while she struggled through a long German sentence. They would correct each other, only to make another mistake moments later, dissolving into laughter all over again.

The daydream became so vivid that Sarah caught herself laughing out loud more than once.

Across the table, Natalie looked up from her paperwork and watched the young woman with quiet amusement. Whatever thoughts were running through Sarah’s mind were clearly happy ones. Rather than interrupt, Natalie simply smiled to herself, shook her head, and returned to her work.

Under her breath, barely louder than a whisper, she murmured with a small smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth, “What I would give to be eighteen again.” She let out a quiet, amused sniffle before turning another page in her paperwork.

Sarah’s days at least had moments that could make her smile. Natalie’s, on the other hand, were far less entertaining. Most of her time was spent reading case files, completing reports, answering messages from the field office, and coordinating with the agents assigned to the protective detail. The only real change in her routine came when she had to leave the house to run an errand or attend a meeting. During those brief absences, another agent from the team outside would take over watching Sarah. Other than that, it was Natalie who spent nearly every hour of the day with her.

When she had first received the assignment, Natalie had been convinced it was going to drive her insane. Guarding a witness around the clock was completely different from anything she had done before. During her first twelve years with the FBI, she had worked almost exclusively in the field, chasing suspects, serving warrants, and investigating crimes. The last three years had been spent behind a desk in administration, a transition she had welcomed after years of long hours and dangerous assignments. She had celebrated her fortieth birthday only a month earlier and had been content with where her career had taken her.

Now, however, she found herself surprised. Being assigned to Sarah had reminded her that there was more to the job than paperwork and meetings. It felt good to be helping someone directly again, even if it meant spending most of her day inside a safe house.

Curious to see how her young charge was doing, Natalie walked around the table and looked over Sarah’s shoulder. A small smile crossed her face when she saw that Sarah was still completely absorbed in her Russian exercises, working through page after page with the same determination she had shown since the study materials had arrived.

Natalie pulled a chair over and sat beside her. Without saying much, she leaned over the workbook and began helping Sarah through the lesson. Russian was one of Natalie’s strongest languages. In fact, she was an accomplished linguist who spoke seven languages fluently and could comfortably hold casual conversations in three more. Throughout her career with the FBI, there had been countless occasions when she had served as an interpreter during interrogations, interviews with foreign assets, and conversations with detainees. She believed languages were skills that had to be be practiced constantly or they would gradually fade with time. Working with Sarah gave her the perfect opportunity to sharpen her Russian while helping someone who genuinely wanted to learn.

More than that, Natalie wanted Sarah to feel comfortable around her. Building trust came naturally to her. Throughout her years in the field, she had learned how to adapt to almost any situation, whether it meant working with new partners, completing difficult assignments, or pushing through the disappointment that came when a mission did not go as planned. Remaining calm and making the people around her feel at ease had become one of her greatest strengths, and she hoped Sarah would eventually see her as more than just another agent standing guard.

Sarah accepted Natalie’s help with genuine appreciation. When she had first arrived at the safe house, she had been deeply uncomfortable living among complete strangers. She had never been able to fully relax because she always felt someone was watching her. It did not matter whether she was reading, exercising, watching television, or simply sitting alone with her thoughts. She knew an agent was always nearby, quietly observing her every move. The lack of privacy constantly gnawed at her, but for the moment she was beginning to realize that not everyone in the house saw her as just another assignment. Natalie was making an honest effort to treat her like a person, and that small kindness was slowly beginning to chip away at the walls Sarah had built around herself.

Natalie had begun giving Sarah something she had not expected to find inside the safe house. She no longer felt completely alone. Even so, there was still one thing she wanted more than anything else in the world. She wanted to find a way to contact Chuck.

As the days passed, she quietly watched the agents come and go, paying close attention to their routines. Her mind constantly searched for possibilities, wondering how she might borrow a phone without anyone noticing. She knew that sooner or later someone would become comfortable enough to let their guard down. People always did. The only question was whether she would recognize the opportunity when it finally presented itself.

Then her conscience would catch up with her. The thought of stealing from someone who was trying to protect her made her stomach tighten with guilt, and she would push the idea aside. Still, the temptation never completely disappeared.

Instead, she found herself remembering the lessons her father had taught her while she was growing up. He had always told her to study people carefully, watch their habits, notice their weaknesses, and never ignore a mistake. Those lessons had once been meant to help her survive in a dishonest world. Now, for the first time, she found herself considering using them for something she believed was completely harmless.

She told herself that if the opportunity ever came, she would only borrow a phone for a minute or two. She would call Chuck, leave him a message if he did not answer, or speak to him for just a few seconds if he did. Then she would quietly slip the phone back before anyone realized it had been missing.

She did not want to escape. She was not trying to outsmart the FBI or interfere with their investigation. She simply needed to know that Chuck was safe. She wanted to hear his voice, tell him she missed him, and let him know that not a single day had passed without thinking about him. That was all she wanted.

For now, though, Sarah knew she would have to wait. All of the schemes and plans she had been quietly imagining would have to be put on hold. She did not want to betray the small amount of trust that had begun to develop between herself and Agent Spears. Reluctantly, she pushed the idea aside and decided to focus instead on everything the FBI had given her to learn. She had no idea whether this house would remain her safe haven, how long the Bureau intended to keep her under protection, or if they planned to move her to another location. Those questions circled endlessly through her mind, but no matter how many times she asked Natalie or one of the other agents, she never received a real answer. Every response was polite, carefully worded, and revealed almost nothing.

As the afternoon slipped away, Sarah noticed the sunlight slowly sinking toward the horizon. Evening settled quietly over the house, bringing with it another day of unanswered questions. By six o’clock she and Natalie were sharing dinner together, talking about simple things that had nothing to do with investigations, murders, or safe houses. When they finished eating, they cleaned up the dishes side by side and spent a short time watching television before Sarah excused herself for the evening.

She retreated to her bedroom carrying her laptop, climbed onto the bed, and propped a pillow across her lap before setting the computer on top of it. Without wasting any time, she opened the study materials the FBI had provided and immersed herself in another round of language lessons and exercises. Every page she completed and every new lesson she learned made her feel as though she was taking one more step toward the future she hoped to build, even if she still had no idea what that future would look like.

Tomorrow, Sarah decided, she would create a schedule for herself. She would organize her days like a classroom, setting aside specific blocks of time for each subject and giving herself a structured routine to follow. It would give her something predictable to focus on and help keep her mind occupied. But that was a task for tomorrow. For tonight, she simply continued working through the pronunciation exercises and reread the dialogues displayed on the online program.

Eventually, exhaustion caught up with her. The words on the screen slowly began to lose their focus, becoming harder to read as her tired eyes struggled to keep up. She tried to push through a few more exercises, but her body had other plans. Before she realized it, she had fallen asleep with the laptop still resting at an angle beside her on the bed.

Sarah never felt Natalie enter the room. She never noticed her quietly closing the laptop and moving it safely aside. She did not feel Natalie adjust the blankets around her or gently brush a few strands of hair away from her forehead before quietly wishing her a good night.

When Sarah finally woke the next morning, she opened her eyes and immediately remembered it was Saturday. To most people, it would have been the beginning of a weekend, a day to relax or make plans. To Sarah, it was simply another day on the calendar, another twenty four hours she would have to endure without Chuck.

That thought lingered for only a moment before she forced herself out of bed and began preparing for the day. Strangely enough, she felt better than she expected. The situation had not changed. She was still inside someone else’s house, surrounded by federal agents, with no clear idea of what would happen next.

Yet something felt different.

For the first time since arriving, Sarah did not feel completely trapped. She had Natalie. She had something to work toward. She had books, lessons, and goals to focus on. And somewhere in the back of her mind was the belief that every step she took forward was another step toward becoming the person Chuck already believed she could be.

She was still surrounded by strangers, and she still had no idea what was happening with her life. More than anything, though, she was still missing Chuck. That feeling had never really left her. No matter how much she tried to distract herself with studying, exercise, or anything else she could find to occupy her mind, her thoughts always seemed to find their way back to him.

She opened her laptop and began reviewing some of the answers from the small quiz she had completed earlier. She was carefully going through her mistakes and making notes when something caught her attention in the corner of the screen. The Wi-Fi indicator showed a full connection.

Her eyes immediately moved toward the bedroom door.

Her heart started beating faster as a sudden realization crossed her mind. Was it possible? Could she actually have internet access? Had someone turned the Wi-Fi back on? She stared at the screen, trying to convince herself there had to be a reasonable explanation.

It must have been a mistake. Maybe it happened when the technician had installed all the programs and downloaded the materials onto her computer. Maybe the connection had simply been activated as part of the setup process and nobody had thought about it afterward.

But now that it was there, a thousand thoughts raced through her mind.

She had a way to reach the outside world.

She had a way to contact Chuck.

Then reality settled back in.

She and Chuck had never exchanged phone numbers. They had never needed to. Everything between them had happened so quickly that neither of them had thought about something as simple as making sure they could reach each other. She knew where he lived, but that did not help her. She had no phone, no way to send him a message, and no idea if anyone was monitoring the connection.

The excitement faded, replaced by frustration.

For a brief moment, she felt like she had found a door out of the room, only to realize she did not have the key. She had the ability to reach Chuck, but she had no idea how to do it safely.

Sarah stared at the screen for several more moments before slowly closing the laptop. As much as she hated admitting it, she knew she would have to wait a little longer.

But at least now she knew there might be a possibility. And for the first time in days, that small possibility gave her something she desperately needed.

  1. Love the pre intersect stories of what if things had happened differently. Plus you both making Chuck competent with more exposure from his mom and Sarah still having her inner strength.
