Chapter 4
I don’t own Chuck
Chuck awoke feeling a pleasant, warm weight on his left side. He looked over and saw Sarah, cuddle up on his shoulder. “I told you there would be consequences for stealing the covers,” she said in a sleepy voice.
“The covers are on you, and are hanging over your side of the bed,” he protested.
“Fine,” she huffed. “I got cold, and you’re warm, and…”
“It’s fine,” Chuck told her. There was silence for a second and he decided to quickly change the subject. “I’ve been doing the math, how did you get back so fast?”
“I drive fast, and didn’t sleep much,” Sarah told him. “That’s how I ended up like this, sorry.”
“Hey, nothing to apologize for,” Chuck told her. She lifted up her head and studied him. “Sarah, I would be dead if it wasn’t for you.”
“By my hand,” she reminded him.
“But I’m not dead, I’m alive,” he reminded her. “So, if you need to cuddle at night to stay warm so that you can continue to keep me safe and we stop this guy, then do so.”
“Chuck,” she began, and then she stopped, shaking her head. “Your gonna see a lot of bad things in the next….well…however long this takes.”
“I’ve already seen a lot of ugliness,” he reminded her, pointing at his head. “A lot of ugliness that you were exposed to against your will.” Sarah shook her head at him. “Here’s what I’m saying, what we are going to have to do is going to be…”
“Complicated?” Sarah offered.
“My sister hates that word,” Chuck told her, laughing. “But, yeah, so, here’s the deal, I’m here. To help you though this, and if you need to cuddle to sleep better-”
“I do not need to cuddle,” Sarah told him.
“Noted,” Chuck replied. “But you didn’t hate it?”
“Didn’t hate it,” Sarah agreed. “Now, I’ve talked to Casey, and we are going to have to hold off on taking off as soon as we wanted to. We’re going to have to find someone to channel money through back channels and create accounts you and I can use while undercover.”
“Anything I can do?” Chuck asked.
“Unless you can figure out a way to move money, and it not be seen, no. I think that’s out of your nerd herd skills,” Sarah told him, grinning. Chuck looked away. “Chuck?” He didn’t say anything, but the look on his face deepened. “Chuck,” she said, raising a questioning eyebrow.
He turned back to her, trepidation on his face. “So, I can trust you, right?” he asked in a frightened voice. Sarah stared at him. “Ever heard of Piranha?”

“Christ,” Casey muttered, watching Chuck in front of a computer.
“What’s he doing, Major?” Beckman asked over the feed.
“I haven’t a damned clue, but suddenly we have their wedding date and certificate, an online presence of Mr and Mrs Carmichael, back stories, and all the evidence in the world that these two are as real or more real than the two flesh and blood people standing in front of me,” Casey said, awe apparent in his voice.
“Mr. Bartowski, are there any other hidden talents that you need to share with us?” Beckman asked.
“I can sing the hell out of some 80s tunes in the shower,” Chuck told Beckman. Sarah snorted in spite of herself. “Somebody’s Watching me, has always been a favorite.” Beckman glared at him, but he swore he saw her lip twitch. “Do you think we need a few Roth IRAs, Mrs. Carmichael?” he asked, never looking at Sarah, typing on one screen and then another.
“I feel the Carmichaels are very carefree, in the moment people, hence why they are traveling the United States with…” She paused and glanced at Casey. “Why is Casey with us?” Sarah asked.
“He’s our man-servant,” Chuck offered.
“No,” Casey growled.
“Would the Carmichaels call him John-John?” Chuck continued.
“I hate this assignment,” Casey muttered.
“You would, but I don’t like to piss off the hired help,” Sarah told him.
“Casey, you’re in trouble, she’s already referring to you as the help,” Chuck said in a sing song voice.
“General,” Casey began.
“No, Major,” Beckman said. “I have no idea what the hell you were going to ask, but just…no. Mr. Bartowski, please quit harassing Major Casey.”
“I’m sorry, General, I’m still going through the trauma of my ‘brains being blown out’,” Chuck explained. “There, it’s done. Got someone that you want to check it?”
“I do,” General Beckman said. “Tomorrow morning you two begin your journey. Major, you go ahead, scout out their first stop. Have you decided on your first stop?”
“General, I’ve been thinking,” Chuck began.
“Christ,” Casey muttered.
“Wait, hear me out, we need to keep a cover, correct?” Chuck asked.
“That is correct, Mr. Bartowski, proceed,” Beckman said, watching Casey rub his head like a migraine was approaching.
“This big tech guru is on a journey to rest, have relaxation, it’s a thirty hour drive to Montgomery, okay, twenty if Agent Walker was driving,” Chuck conceded.
“More like twenty-five, but thanks for the faith in me,” Sarah told him.
“You’re welcome,” Chuck replied.
“The point,” Beckman said. “Where do you think you should go?”
“Tombstone, Arizona is about eight hours away,” Chuck began.
“Oh hell no,” Casey muttered. Beckman stared at Casey for a moment and grinned.
“Agent Walker, to better complete the cover, I would like your opinion on this,” Beckman began. “Do you think protection wise this would work?”
“I do,” Sarah admitted. “And maybe staying two nights.”
“General,” Casey protested.
“Major, we have to protect the Intersect, and figure out what all he is seeing about Director Graham, we have to sell this cover,” Beckman told him. “And I really feel Mr. Carmichael really wants to explore Tombstone.
“Fine,” Casey told her. “What kind of accommodations?”
Chuck just stood there and Sarah elbowed him in the side. “What? Oh, well, there are mining cabins that looked kinda cool.”
“Fine, I’ll get one for you two and one for me, and of course, to sell your cover, I’ll make sure there’s only one bed,” Casey said, proud of himself.
“That’s probably best since we’re cover married,” Sarah said to Casey.
The two were staring at each other, neither giving an inch. “Thank you,” Chuck said softly. Both turned to him. “I get it, I should be dead, I’m living on borrowed time, so thank you both for protecting me. This…what I’m doing…right now…it’s a defense mechanism because I’m scared to death.”
“You should be,” Casey said. “We’ll keep you safe, Bartowski. Walker, text me when you get to Tombstone.” With that Casey left.
“He likes me,” Chuck told Sarah. Beckman rolled her eyes and cut the feed. “He does,” Chuck insisted.
“Come on, Mr. Carmichael, we have planning to do,” Sarah said taking his arm and pulling him away from the computer.
And the Carmichaels are created. How lovely!
