Right Place At The Right Time
Author’s Note:
Things are starting to spiral out of control for Sarah. Thankfully, Chuck is doing everything he can to reassure her that he’ll always be there for her. Graham has some bad news, but he’s also thinking about Sarah’s future. As always, let me know what you think. Your feedback and reviews are amazing, and they truly motivate me to keep writing for each and every one of you. There are so many incredible stories being written right now, and they’re keeping me busy as a reader as well. Some chapters are becoming quite long, which means they take a little more time to finish, but the character development and storytelling these writers are producing are absolutely outstanding. I’d love to list all the authors and the names of their fantastic stories, but the list has grown far too long. You’ll just have to take a look for yourselves.
Cheers, guys!
Oh yeah, before I forget, I don’t own Chuck, somebody else does.
Chapter 4
Temporary Residence
One of the agents explained that the FBI had arranged a temporary secure residence nearby where Sarah would remain under protective custody. For security reasons, neither she nor Chuck would be told the location until they arrived, ensuring that even if someone attempted to question them later, they would have no information to give.
As they prepared to leave, another thought crossed Chuck’s mind.
“What happens to my car?”
One of the agents answered immediately.
“For now, it will remain secured in our parking facility. Once you’re settled into the safe house, we’ll evaluate whether it’s appropriate to relocate it there or continue storing it here.”
Chuck nodded before another concern surfaced.
“I’ve got my laptop, my school books, and a small bag of clothes in the trunk. I’ll need those if I’m going to keep up with my classes.”
“We’ll make sure you have access to your belongings,” the agent assured him. “If it’s safe to retrieve them now, we’ll do so before taking you to your new location.”
That answer seemed to satisfy him.
Together, they made their way down to the parking garage and stopped beside Chuck’s car. He unlocked the door, reached inside, and gathered a few things he thought he might need. As he was about to close the door, his eyes fell on Sarah’s small package lying on the passenger side floorboard.
For a moment, he simply stared at it.
He bent down, picked it up carefully, and slipped it into the bag containing his clothes. Satisfied that he had everything he needed, he closed the car door and locked it.
The group then headed toward one of the waiting FBI vehicles, ready to leave for the safe house.
The drive to the safe house was quiet. Their phones had already been secured, the vehicle windows were tinted dark enough that neither Chuck nor Sarah could tell exactly where they were going, and no one volunteered any information about the route. By the time they finally arrived, both of them had completely lost their sense of direction.
The house itself appeared ordinary from the outside, which Chuck assumed was exactly the point. Inside, however, everything had been prepared in advance. The furnishings were comfortable, the kitchen was fully stocked, several bedrooms had already been made up, and the security system appeared far more sophisticated than anything either of them had ever seen. The agents gave them a brief tour, explained a few basic rules, and encouraged them to spend the evening getting familiar with their temporary home.
With nothing else expected of them for the rest of the night, they quietly explored the house together before finally allowing themselves to relax.
Sarah was the first to settle down.
She wandered into the living room, lowered herself onto the large couch, and turned on the television more for background noise than for entertainment. Curling her legs beneath her, she pulled a blanket around herself and sank deep into the cushions. Even though she had showered, changed into clean clothes, and looked far more rested than she had only a few hours earlier, the exhaustion still clung to her. She instinctively made herself as small as possible, almost as though she could disappear into the corner of the couch and hide from everything that had happened outside its walls.
Even after showering and changing into clean clothes, Sarah still couldn’t shake the feeling that she was dirty. It wasn’t something soap and water could wash away. The memories of the previous day clung to her like a second skin. Every time she closed her eyes she could still see the blood, hear the gunfire, and picture the lifeless bodies of the only people she had known, however flawed they had been. She knew they were criminals, but that did not lessen the horror of watching them executed. Those images had followed her into the safe house, and she doubted they would be leaving anytime soon.
Chuck understood that neither of them could change what had already happened. For now, all they could do was take advantage of the rare opportunity to rest. They both sensed the quiet would not last. Whatever came next would demand everything they had, and once it began there probably would not be many chances to simply sit, breathe, and gather themselves again. Neither of them realized that events had already been set in motion long before they ever arrived at the FBI field office, and decisions made earlier that morning would soon reshape both of their lives.
Earlier that day, Director Graham had arranged a private meeting with Emma O’Connolly. His hope was to negotiate a deal that would benefit both the FBI and Emma’s family. Once they were seated across from one another, Graham wasted little time getting to the point. He informed her that arrest warrants had already been issued for both her and her husband and that the warrants would be executed later that afternoon. Graham also explained that the Bureau was fully aware her daughter Jenny had been living under an alias. From that point forward, she would officially be identified as Sarah Walker, and all Bureau records concerning her current situation in Los Angeles would use that name.
Emma accepted the decision without objection. She understood the value of separating her daughter’s true identity from the name Jenny, the identity they had used on countless confidence schemes over the years. If Sarah Walker and Jenny could exist as two separate people in the eyes of the world, then perhaps her daughter would have a chance to leave that old life behind and build a new one that was truly her own. He told her that Sarah has been working with a small crew responsible for a series of minor crimes. Graham told her that while Sarah had initially been used only as a distraction during those jobs, the assignments were becoming increasingly dangerous, and he believed she was now getting in far over her head.
Emma sat quietly, absorbing every word. Ever since Jenny had finished school, she would disappear for several days at a time, sometimes even an entire week, before returning home with the simple explanation that she had been looking for work and that everything was fine.
Emma had believed her.
She had never imagined her daughter had been traveling back and forth to Los Angeles, much less becoming involved with a small criminal crew behind their backs. The revelation unsettled her far more than she wanted to admit.
Their entire way of life depended on remaining unnoticed. She and Jack had spent years surviving by keeping a low profile, avoiding unnecessary attention while carrying out their own cons. The last thing they needed was someone drawing law enforcement or dangerous criminals to their doorstep.
What troubled Emma even more was learning that Jenny had been using the alias Sarah Walker while she was away. That was something she had never shared with them.
If Jenny had truly become involved with reckless and desperate people, then the careful balance they had spent years maintaining had already begun to unravel, and Emma feared there was no easy way to put it back together.
Seeing the concern on her face, Graham leaned forward. “Help us bring down the Brazilian cartel family you’ve been working around, and I’ll do everything within my authority to make your sentence more manageable. I’ll recommend leniency where I can, improve your conditions while you’re incarcerated, and push for a reduced sentence if your cooperation proves valuable.”
Emma hardly hesitated before shaking her head. “I’m not nearly as worried about myself as I am about my daughter. If you want a deal, then Sarah comes first. I need your word that she’ll be protected and that no harm will come to her. That part is not negotiable. Find a way to give her a real life, one where she never has to return to crime again. If you can promise me that, then we have something to talk about.
Graham leaned back in his chair and let out a quiet laugh. “I can’t promise you anything, Emma, but I will do everything within my power to help her. That’s the best I can offer.”
Emma studied him for several long seconds before giving a reluctant nod.
“The first thing we need to do,” Graham continued, “is prepare you for this afternoon. Under no circumstances can you tell your husband what’s happening. He cannot suspect anything. If he finds out ahead of time, he’ll make the operation far more difficult than it needs to be, and he could make your life miserable in the process. I’ll personally be joining the task force when your arrest is carried out. At the same time, several agents in Los Angeles are already monitoring Sarah’s activities. Once I’m finished here, I’ll head to Los Angeles myself and see what can be done for her. I still can’t make you any promises, but if you cooperate with us, I’ll do everything I reasonably can to protect your daughter.”
Over the next twenty minutes Emma carefully described several of the cons she and her husband had carried out during the past year, providing names, locations, methods, and victims. Graham listened without interrupting, making notes whenever something stood out. One particular operation immediately caught his attention because of its connection to a much larger investigation the Bureau had been quietly building. He marked it for further review, recognizing that it could become a valuable lead later.
When they finished, Graham went over the details of the afternoon’s arrest one final time, instructing Emma to behave exactly as she normally would and to give her husband no reason to suspect the FBI was closing in.
“I understand,” Emma replied quietly.
They stood and shook hands.
“You have my word,” Graham said. “I’ll do whatever I can to help your daughter.”
That promise stayed with him for the remainder of the day. By the time the operation in Los Angeles had concluded and Sarah had been brought into protective custody, Director Langston Graham had already made an important decision. At least for the foreseeable future, he would personally oversee both Sarah Walker and Chuck Bartowski. Sarah’s situation was straightforward enough. She was a witness, a victim, and a young woman whose life had been shaped by circumstances beyond her control. Chuck, however, was another matter entirely. Graham had not yet decided where the gifted computer science student fit into the larger picture, but one thing had become abundantly clear. Chuck Bartowski was not walking away from this case, and until Graham understood exactly what role the young prodigy might one day play, he intended to keep him very close.
Morning arrived far sooner than either of them would have liked.
Just before eight o’clock, Graham pulled into the driveway carrying two boxes of donuts and a cardboard tray holding several cups of fresh coffee. He let himself in after the security detail admitted him, expecting to find the house only beginning to stir.
The previous night, had been mostly peaceful. Chuck and Sarah had slept in separate bedrooms, and despite everything that had happened, exhaustion had finally overcome them both.
For Sarah, however, sleep offered no escape.
The nightmare returned without warning.
She found herself standing once again inside the house in Los Angeles. The sound of gunfire echoed through every room. Bodies collapsed around her. Men shouted orders she couldn’t understand. The smell of gunpowder filled the air as six armed killers calmly walked among the fallen, firing additional shots into people who were already dead.
Sarah screamed.
The sound tore through the quiet house.
Chuck bolted upright, his heart pounding before he even understood where he was. For a brief, disoriented moment he stared into the darkness of his bedroom, struggling to remember why he wasn’t in his apartment back in Echo Park.
Then he heard her again.
Without thinking, he threw off the blankets, rushed into the hallway, and burst into Sarah’s room.
She was sitting upright in bed, trembling uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face as panic overwhelmed her.
Chuck climbed onto the bed beside her without hesitation and wrapped both arms around her, pulling her tightly against his chest. He gently rocked her back and forth, one hand smoothing her hair while the other held her securely. Every few moments he pressed a soft kiss against the top of her head, never loosening his embrace for even a second.
“It’s okay,” he whispered. “I’ve got you. You’re safe. I’m right here.”
Sarah clung to him with surprising strength, burying her face against his shoulder as the tears continued to fall. She cried until there was almost nothing left inside her, allowing the fear and horror of the previous day to escape one sob at a time.
Gradually her breathing steadied. The trembling eased. The nightmare loosened its grip.
Still resting safely in Chuck’s arms, she drew in a shaky breath and looked up at him with embarrassed eyes.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “That was so childish.”
Chuck gently brushed a tear from her cheek and smiled.
“You’ve got absolutely nothing to apologize for.”
Chuck immediately reassured her, speaking softly until the last traces of panic began to disappear from her face. He told her there was nothing weak or childish about what she was experiencing. Anyone who had witnessed the kind of violence she had endured the previous day would carry scars from it. Some people spent years trying to recover from memories like those, and many never fully did. He reminded her that she had survived something unimaginably traumatic and that, despite her fear, she had continued moving forward. As far as he was concerned, that made her one of the bravest people he had ever met.
His words slowly settled her racing mind. She wiped the remaining tears from her cheeks, and together they got ready for the day. When they finally emerged from their bedrooms, they realized just how early it still was. The safe house remained quiet, the sun only beginning to brighten the morning outside.
With nothing else to do, they wandered into the living room and turned on the television. A cartoon happened to be playing, and neither of them bothered changing the channel. They sat together on the couch, although they left a small space between them. Despite agreeing the previous evening to become boyfriend and girlfriend, neither of them had the slightest idea how couples were actually supposed to behave. Every glance felt awkward, every smile made them blush, and every accidental touch left them wondering if they were doing something wrong. In the end, they simply watched cartoons together, occasionally laughing at something silly on the screen while waiting to see what the day would bring.
Outside, the FBI security detail had already changed shifts. Two agents remained parked across the street, watching the house from an unmarked vehicle while maintaining constant communication with headquarters. Shortly before eight o’clock, Director Graham arrived with a fresh team that would relieve the overnight agents and assume responsibility for protecting the residence throughout the day.
After exchanging a few words with the security personnel outside, Graham entered the house carrying two boxes of donuts and several cups of fresh coffee. He found Chuck and Sarah waiting for him in the kitchen, and before long the three of them were seated around the table sharing breakfast while discussing the day’s plans.
It was Thursday, October 3.
Chuck knew he would miss three university classes that morning, but before leaving Los Angeles he had contacted his professors and arranged to receive as much course material as possible online. It wasn’t an ideal solution, but at least it would allow him to keep pace with his studies while everything else in his life was being turned upside down.
Graham eventually folded his hands on the table and looked at the young couple.
“Today,” he said, “I have both good news and bad news.”
Chuck and Sarah exchanged a quick glance before returning their attention to him.
“The first piece of good news is that we’ve secured a place for Sarah to stay,” Director Graham said. “We’ve arranged protected lodging in Burbank that meets all of our security requirements, and if everything goes according to plan, we’ll be moving Sarah there early next week.”
Both of them immediately relaxed, knowing that at least one important problem had finally been solved.
The good news, however, came with an important limitation. Chuck would not be permitted to stay at the same location as Sarah. The FBI had determined that the safest arrangement required Sarah to remain inside the secured Burbank facility with full time protection, while Chuck would only be allowed to visit during approved hours.
The news immediately weighed on Chuck.
He understood the reasoning behind it, even if he hated the idea. The last thing he wanted was to be separated from Sarah after everything they had gone through together. Only a day earlier they had been complete strangers, and now the thought of not being there when she needed him felt impossible to accept. Still, he knew this was not about what he wanted. It was about keeping her alive.
While Chuck processed the information, Graham focused on the other part of the morning’s agenda. He sat with Sarah and provided her with an FBI laptop containing a series of photographs, surveillance images, and official mug shots of individuals connected to the criminal organization they believed was responsible for the murders in Los Angeles.
“Take your time,” Graham told her. “Don’t try to force yourself to recognize someone. If a face looks familiar, let us know. Even a small detail could help.”
Sarah nodded and began carefully reviewing each image. She studied every photograph with intense concentration, searching through her memories of the terrifying moments inside that house. She wanted to help, but each image also brought her closer to the reality of what she had witnessed.
While Sarah worked through the photos, Graham stepped away with Chuck to have a private conversation.
“Chuck, I want you to understand something. This decision is not a punishment, and it isn’t because we believe you are a threat. However, you have not been granted the security clearance required to live inside an active FBI safe location.”
Chuck ran a hand through his hair, already knowing where the conversation was heading.
“Sarah will remain under full protection until the people responsible for the murders are captured. Beyond that, our investigation will continue. We aren’t only looking for the individuals who pulled the triggers. We intend to identify and prosecute the people above them who ordered these crimes and organized everything.”
Chuck listened quietly, his expression showing his frustration.
This was not the news he had hoped to hear.
Then again, he reminded himself that he wasn’t the one making these decisions. He wasn’t an agent. He wasn’t trained for this world. He was simply a college student who had walked into a dangerous situation because he couldn’t leave someone in need behind.
If this arrangement gave Sarah the best chance of staying safe, then he couldn’t argue against it.
But he knew Sarah.
He knew she would not be happy about being separated from him either.
Graham noticed the concern on Chuck’s face.
“I’ll handle explaining the situation to Sarah,” he said. “I’ll make sure she understands why this decision was made.”
Chuck nodded, although the uncertainty remained.
He looked across the room toward Sarah, who was still examining the photographs, completely unaware of the conversation happening behind her. He couldn’t help wondering how she would react when she found out that, for her own protection, the FBI planned to keep them apart.
Graham knew the conversation with Sarah would not be easy. He had already seen how deeply attached the two of them had become in such a short amount of time, and he understood that separating them would feel like taking away the one thing that had given her stability. Still, he also knew that emotions could not override security concerns.
He explained to Chuck that he would have to leave the safe house later that afternoon. A female FBI agent would be assigned to stay inside the residence with Sarah, while two additional agents would remain stationed outside at all times. The lead investigator would also return later in the day to continue gathering information from Sarah and review everything she could remember about the events in Los Angeles.
Chuck stood quietly for a moment before finally getting up and walking away from the kitchen table. His thoughts were racing.
He had no idea how Sarah was going to react.
Only one day earlier, they had been complete strangers. Then, in the span of a few impossible hours, they had gone from strangers to friends, from friends to partners, and finally to boyfriend and girlfriend. Now, barely a day later, they were being told they had to separate.
The only comfort was knowing that he would still be allowed to visit her during approved times after she had been relocated to LA.
It wasn’t what he wanted, but it was something.
Graham approached Sarah carefully and explained the situation.
The reaction was immediate.
“No.”
The word came out before he could finish.
Sarah shook her head, her expression changing from confusion to fear.
“No, Chuck can’t leave. You can’t do that.”
Graham tried to explain the reasoning behind the decision, but Sarah refused to accept it.
“I won’t do this.”
Her voice became more desperate.
“I won’t answer any more questions. I won’t cooperate if you’re going to take him away from me.”
She looked toward Chuck, panic beginning to replace anger.
“I’ll leave. I’ll just go.”
“Sarah,” Graham said calmly, trying to keep her focused, “that isn’t what anyone wants.”
But she was already overwhelmed.
The fear, exhaustion, and trauma she had been holding inside since the previous day finally broke through. Her legs gave out beneath her, and she dropped to her knees on the floor. She grabbed handfuls of her hair as tears poured down her face, her breathing becoming uneven as she struggled to process everything happening around her.
Chuck immediately started toward her, but Graham gently held out a hand.
“Wait.”
Chuck looked at him, confused and frustrated.
Graham didn’t say anything else. He simply watched Sarah.
He had seen this reaction before. People who experienced extreme trauma often held themselves together until the moment they felt even a small piece of security being taken away. For Sarah, that security was Chuck.
Eventually, the storm would pass.
After several moments, Graham turned toward Chuck.
“I’m sorry, but you need to understand that we have to move forward with the arrangements.”
Chuck looked back at Sarah, his heart breaking at the sight of her.
“You need to leave within the next thirty minutes so we can get everything in place.”
Chuck nodded slowly, but he didn’t move right away.
Leaving her was the last thing Chuck wanted to do.
As Sarah dropped to her knees, burying her face in her hands, the tears came without restraint. At first they were wracking sobs, but after several long moments they softened into quiet cries. Through it all, she kept repeating the same desperate words.
“No… no… he can’t leave. Please don’t take him away from me.”
Her voice cracked with every plea, each one breaking Chuck’s heart a little more.
Several minutes passed before Sarah slowly pushed herself back to her feet. She stood in front of him, her eyes red from crying, struggling to catch her breath. Chuck’s own heart was breaking, but he knew he had to stay strong. If he let his emotions take over, it would only make Sarah’s desperation worse.
Without saying a word, Sarah stepped forward and wrapped both arms tightly around his waist, pressing her head firmly against his chest as though letting go would cause him to disappear forever.
Chuck held her closer than he had ever held anyone in his life.
One hand rested gently against the back of her head while the other rubbed slow circles across her back, trying to calm her. He lowered his head, placing soft kisses on the top of her hair as he whispered reassuringly.
“We’re going to get through this. It’s only temporary. I will never leave you, Sarah. I promise. My word is my bond.”
Sarah refused to loosen her grip. In that moment, Chuck had become her anchor, the one person making her feel safe in a world that had been turned completely upside down.
Eventually, Chuck gently eased her back just enough to look into her eyes. Reluctantly, she allowed him to guide her by the shoulders until they were standing only inches apart. They rested their foreheads together, neither of them wanting to break the connection.
No more words were needed.
Everything they needed to say had already been spoken.
A few minutes later, the female agent returned to the safe house carrying several shopping bags from nearby department stores. Inside were multiple sets of clothing, toiletries, undergarments, and a couple of pairs of shoes, all carefully selected to provide Sarah with everything she would need while staying at the secure location.
The agent approached her gently.
“Sarah, I brought some things for you. If there is anything else you need, just let me know and we’ll make sure you have it.”
Sarah barely looked up.
Her frustration and fear had not disappeared. If anything, they had settled deeper inside her.
“Just leave,” she said quietly. “I don’t want to be around anyone right now except Chuck.”
The female agent looked toward Graham, unsure how to proceed. Graham gave a small nod toward the door, silently telling her to step outside and give them privacy.
She placed the bags down and left the room.
The moment the agent left the room, Sarah turned back toward Chuck. Whatever strength she had managed to hold onto vanished in an instant. The fragile composure she had fought so hard to maintain collapsed, and she rushed into his arms once again.
“Please don’t go,” she whispered through her tears. “Please, Chuck.”
Chuck wrapped his arms around her without hesitation, holding her tightly as she cried against his chest. One hand rested protectively across her back while the other gently stroked her hair, doing everything he could to comfort her. He continued rubbing slow circles across her back as he quietly repeated the same reassurance over and over.
“It’s going to be okay. I’ll make sure of it, Sarah. I promise.”
Sarah clung to him as though letting go would cause everything around her to disappear. In that moment, Chuck was the only thing keeping her world from completely falling apart, and neither of them wanted to be the first to loosen their embrace.
“I’ll come see you as often as they allow me to,” he whispered. “I’ll be there every chance I get. We’ll figure out ways to stay in contact. You’re not alone.”
Sarah didn’t answer. She simply stayed there, listening to his voice and holding onto the one person who had made her feel safe since everything in her world had fallen apart.
At 12:15 in the afternoon, the time finally came for Chuck to leave.

At 12:15 in the afternoon, the time finally came for Chuck to leave.
Neither of them wanted the moment to arrive, but there was nothing either of them could do to stop it. After one final embrace and several quiet promises that they would see each other again soon, Chuck reluctantly turned and started walking toward the front door with one of the agents following a few steps behind. He stopped with his hand resting on the doorknob and stared at it for a long moment. Then, without saying a word, he turned around and walked straight back to Sarah.
Gently, he cupped her face in both of his hands and looked deeply into her eyes. Every emotion he had been trying to hold back was written plainly across his face. Slowly, he leaned forward and kissed her. It was tender, unhurried, and filled with every feeling he could not find the words to express. In that moment, nothing else existed. Chuck wished time would simply stop and allow them to remain there forever.
Sarah closed her eyes and raised her hands to his cheeks, returning the kiss with the same love and compassion. She held him as though refusing to let go might somehow keep him from leaving. When their lips finally parted, neither of them spoke. They simply stood there, gazing into each other’s eyes, trying to memorize every detail before they were forced apart.
Chuck rested his forehead gently against hers and whispered, “I’ll be waiting for you, and I’ll see you again soon. I promise.”
Sarah slowly licked her lips, savoring the last trace of the kiss as though she never wanted it to disappear.
“Thank you, Chuck,” she whispered.
They were the only words she could manage.
Chuck smiled softly, leaned forward, and kissed her gently on the forehead.
“Bye, Sarah.”
With one last lingering look, he turned, opened the door, and walked out of the safe house, leaving a piece of his heart behind with her.
He returned to the FBI field office, retrieved his car, and began the long drive back to Los Angeles.
The two hour trip felt much longer than it should have.
Chuck stared at the road ahead, feeling completely drained. He had spent the last day living through situations he never imagined possible, and now he was driving away from the one person who had somehow become the most important part of his life.
The strangest part was the loneliness.
For years, Chuck had been familiar with being alone. It was something he had accepted and learned to live with.
But this felt different.
This time, he knew exactly what he was missing.
