Chapter 48

A/N I’ll bet you’re wondering why I did this. The story already had a great ending. I guess the answer is simple. I felt like it needed doing. I hope it doesn’t ruin anything for you.
In any case, I wrote it, and I’m very aware how long it is. Feel free to not read it. I just had this urge to actually finish the story. I also tried to tie it in with the fictional part of Inside Sarah Walker. I’m hoping I got back to writing that. So go ahead read. I hope you like it. If you don’t, oh well… Bwaa Ha Ha.

Chapter 48: The Epilogue
It’s a perfect November, fall day in Burbank. The air is crisp and clean. The palm trees are waving in the gentle breeze. Cars line the streets reminding everyone that it’s time for families and friends to come together. “Sarah, what are you doing on your knees? You do know that’s why we hire landscapers.”
Sarah Bartowski turns her head to look up at her husband. She holds her hand up when the sun blinds her momentarily. “Hon, you know it’s our turn to do Thanksgiving. The whole family is coming. It was just a couple of weeds. It won’t kill me. I want the house to be perfect.
I can’t believe I have to wait almost a whole year for my gardenias to come back. Thank you for planting those trees for me. At least I have a little fall color to enjoy.” She reaches her hand up and Chuck helps her to her feet. She pulls his head down for a kiss. “Tell me husband, have I told you how much I love you?”
Chuck smiles and kisses his wife. “Nope, not in at least two hours. I think it was when you had me raking that fall color off the lawn.”
Sarah smiles at his mock complaining. “Thank you for loving me, Chuck.” She pushes a bit of greying hair behind his ear. “Hmmm, looks like your lawn could use a trim.”
He takes her hand, and they walk up to the porch and through the red door. “Hon, I don’t want you stressing yourself. I don’t know why you wouldn’t let me hire caterers.”
Sarah smiles, “Chuck Bartowski, are trying to say you don’t like my cooking?”
Chuck sighs. “Don’t start Baby. Does this gut say I don’t like my wife’s cooking? I want you to take it easy. You’ve been shopping and prepping for two days. You cleaned after the cleaning people left. It’s enough. No one wants to see you exhausted. Who would have guessed? Sarah Walker; Super Spy, Super Housewife, Super Mother, Corporate Mogul.”
Sarah moves into the kitchen. “Sweetheart, The name is Bartowski. Forget again and I may have to use some of those spy skills to remind you. Now, get your adorable brain focused. We have a lot of people coming. We need a lot of food. I’m making two turkeys and a Tofurkey for the vegans. Speaking of veggies, did you remember the little marshmallows? Morgan gets nuts if he doesn’t have them on his sweet potatoes.” Chuck shakes his head, “Yes Dear, I got the marshmallows. They’re in the pantry. I’m not going to be able to get you to relax, am I?”
“Sweetheart, I’m about to have a house full of people I love. I’m going to get to enjoy all the love you brought into my life. While I’m cooking, all I can think about are the smiles on everyone’s face. When I hear the oohs and ahhs over my food, my heart soars. Baby, I’m very relaxed. Now are you going to whine all day or are you going to peel those sweet potatoes for me?”
Chuck grumbles as he starts to peel. “I could have sworn you said I was the boss.”
Sarah laughs, “Of course you are Sweetheart. I appreciate that right now the boss wants to make his wife happy.” The doorbell rings. “Hon would you get that? My hands are all messy.”
Chuck walks to the door. Opening it a big smile attacks his face. “Sis, it’s good to see you.”
Ellie walks in and hugs him, “Chuck, I saw you at work yesterday.”
Chuck hugs her tight. “I know, but it’s always good to see my big sister. Where are Devon and Clara?”
She walks in carrying bags. “They’ll be over later. I came early. I figured Sarah might like some help. Where are the kids?”
Sarah calls from the kitchen. “Thanks Ellie you’re the best. The only thing I can get from your brother is whine, and not the good kind.”
“They should be here soon. They’re driving down from Stanford together.”
“Good it’ll be nice to see them again.” They walk into the kitchen. Ellie holds up her bags. “I brought some appetizers and the good kind of wine.”
Sarah smiles and walks over to hug Ellie. She holds her hands out so as not to mess Ellie’s clothes. “I was right, you are the best. Hon, please put the apps in the fridge and pour us some of that wine.”
Chuck opens the bags and starts to unpack them. “I was not whining. I don’t want her working so hard. Isn’t it a little early for wine?”
“Your kind yes. Chuck, stop pouting and pour. Ellie would you please explain to your stubborn brother that cooking for people you love is not work.
It’s a joy.”
Ellie kisses Chuck’s cheek. “Give it up little brother. You’re not going to win this one. Your wife is delusional.”
Sarah laughs, “Thanks Ellie, I appreciate the support.”
Ellie laughs with her. “Sorry Sis, but I did come to help. What do you need?”
“Since you’re here, why don’t you make Morgan’s sweet potatoes. Seem you’re the only one who knows how to do it right. Maybe you could also handle the mashed potatoes. Hon, would you mind setting the tables?”
“On it Baby.” Chuck grabs a stack of plates, and silverware.
“Hon make sure you leave the center clear. We’ll need lots of room for the food platters. Oh, Chuck do you remember where we stored the gravy boats?”
Chuck thinks a moment. “Hmmm, I think they may be in the cupboard right over where you’re working. Let me check.” He puts the plates down, walks over and presses against Sarah. He stretches up and moves things around, including his pelvis. “Hmmm, not seeing them.” He stretches up some more.”
“Charles Bartowski, did you just create an excuse to rub up against me?”
Chuck smiles. “Who me? Why would I do that? Do I need an excuse?”
Sarah turns and faces him. “With your sister standing right there. I would guess so.”
Chuck takes her face in his hands. “I can’t help myself. I can’t touch you enough.”
Sarah pushes her face forward to kiss him. “I guess I did promise you a fifty-year honeymoon.” Suddenly Sarah puts on a Russian accent. “Nyet, American spy. I am not yet ready to give you up. She vill not haf you until I am finished vith you. I am not yet done to torture you.” Ellie stares at the two of them. “Um guys, are you okay?”
“So American spy you have brought somevone to rescue you. It vill serve you to no purpose. You are in mine power. Mine to toy vith. You vill go novere.”
Chuck turns towards Ellie, “Sis, run. Natasha is a dangerous Russian espionage agent. And mean, she’s so mean. She’s kept me prisoner for so many years. Run, save yourself. She says if I try to leave, she’ll kill Sarah.”
Sarah strokes his face in a toying manner. “Yes, American spy. She vill not haf you. You are mine to play vith.”
“Okay it’s official. That thing in your head has driven you insane and somehow spread to Sarah.”
Chuck and Sarah laugh. Chuck kisses his wife. “I’d better get that table set. Our company will be here soon. I think I know where the gravy boats are. I’ll get them.”
Ellie laughs, “He’s still a goof. Looks like he may have had some influence on you.”
Sarah turns back her work. “A romantic goof. And yes, he has, thank God. Ellie, My years with Chuck, with you and the rest of the family, have been incredible. I could never have imagined it. Before I met Chuck, I believed I was doomed to live alone and die in a dark alley somewhere.” Sarah takes in a deep breath and lets it out in a long sigh.
Ellie moves over and hugs Sarah from behind. “We’re glad we found you too Sis. You know, you saved Chuck. He was aimless, depressed, wasting his life.” Ellie sighs and makes a comment under her breath. “Reminds me of a young lady I know.” Sarah hears her comment. I’m guessing she means Clara. She’ll talk about it when she’s ready
Once again speaking aloud. “I’ll admit I wasn’t crazy about him getting involved in all that spy crap. I also have to admit that it helped him grow up. It gave him purpose and confidence. However, that being said, you are the best thing that ever happened for him. He loves you completely. Thank you. Sarah. You saved my little brother. You did what I couldn’t.”
She wipes her hands off, turns and hugs Ellie. “I guess you understand why Thanksgiving is so important to me. I have so much to be grateful for.
You know I’m here for you, right?”
Ellie steps back. “I know, and I get it Sarah, I really do. However cooking for Morgan, not so much.”
Sarah laughs. “Come on El, you know you love the little guy. He makes Chuck happy. I love watching them play together. Any man who can raise loving kids like his, has to have something going for him. He was instrumental in growing the company and making it so successful. He’s a good man.”
Ellie smiles as she goes back to peeling potatoes. “I know, but he’s still that annoying little brother to me.”
The doorbell rings. Chuck calls out from the dining room. “I got it Hon.” Chuck opens the door. His eyes go wide, and his finger goes to his lips to hush the people at the door. He brings them into the house and hugs them. Smiling wide he yells, “Sarah did you order a couple of live turkeys?”
Sarah comes rushing in from the kitchen wiping her hands on a kitchen towel. “Live turkeys? Chuck what are you talking about?” Coming into the foyer, she sees the new arrivals, and screams, “Gretchen, Z…how?” Throwing the towel to the floor she rushes to take her friends in her arms.
Zondra answers, “Did you really think we were going to miss out on Sarah Bartowski’s cooking? Your husband called to remind us that you hate surprises and asked us if we would help him surprise you. Must be nice to have a rich husband with his own jet.” The three of them laugh as they hug and kiss.
Zondra, squeezes Sarah tight. “At least DC is closer than Naples. Took some doing to convince my protection detail they wouldn’t be needed here.”
Gretchen looks over Sarah’s shoulder. “Chuck, would you give Jeffrey a hand with our bags? He’s on the curb. Hope you have room for three old friends.” Chuck heads out the door.
Zondra admonishes her. “Gretchen, we are not going to put them out that way. We’ll go to a hotel.”
Sarah squeezes them both. “Like hell you will. I get to see you once in a blue moon and you think I’m going to let you stay at a hotel?” Sarah jokes, “Worst case scenario, you can share the king size bed with me and Chuck.”
Gretchen laughs, “Yes! I finally get another shot at the nerd. Alright!”
Zondra gives her a push, “Yeah, like you have a shot. Trust me I’ve tried. Not gonna happen. What about Jeffrey? He may have something to say about it.”
Sarah laughs. “You two never give up.” She hugs them tight. “I’ve missed you so much. Gretchen, we should never have let you move to the
Chicago office.”
Ellie walks out of the kitchen. “Hello ladies. I hope I’m not intruding.”
Gretchen looks up. “Intruding my ass. There’s always room for family. Get over here Formerly Bartowski. Give us a hug.”
Sarah laughs. “Looks like Casey taught you something. Geez I can’t believe my sisters are going to all be here together. Alex should be here soon.
This is the best Thanksgiving ever.”
Chuck walks through the door. “Says the lady not carrying the luggage.”
Jeffrey laughs, “Come on Boss, it’s not that heavy.”
Sarah moves away from her friends. “Original Bartowski, drop that suitcase and get your ass over here.” The ladies laugh. Chuck puts the bag down and stands in front of Sarah. “Did you surprise your wife?”
“Aye, aye Superior Spouse I did.” Zondra, Gretchen, and Ellie are laughing behind their hands. Jeffrey smiles.
“Did you do that, fully aware that I hate surprises?” Chuck fakes a hard swallow. He stares at the floor in shame. “Are you also aware how much your wife loves and adores you.” Chuck looks up smiling. Sarah puts her arms around him and squeezes hard. She tilts her head up. “Thank you, Baby. Now kiss your wife.”
Jeffrey stands waiting to find out what to do with the luggage. Sarah lets go of Chuck. “And you Kozlowski, you were complicit in this deceit. Get over here and hug your sister.” Jeffrey moves over to hug her. “How are you? It’s so good to see you. You do know he’s not your boss anymore.”
He hugs Sarah back. “It’s good to see you too Sarah. I’m good. I know he’s not my boss anymore, but I still like calling him that. He’s still the best boss I ever had. Those two cases are filled with frozen foods from the restaurant.”
Sarah kisses his cheek. “Thanks Sweetie, you didn’t need to do that.”
Gretchen interrupts. “Yes, he did. His new boss said so. And I think you meant to say second best boss.” The group laughs. Gretchen smiles, “Sweetheart, would you mind helping Chuck put that food away. Make sure you leave the appetizers and desserts out so they can defrost.”
Jeffrey smiles. “On it Boss.” The ladies laugh.
Chuck starts towards the kitchen with the food filled bags. “I warned you Bro. You should have listened.” The ladies laugh louder.
Zondra shakes her head. “I’m jealous. I’m the only CAT without her nerd.”
“Come on ladies the kitchen beckons. Z, are you saying you’re unhappy?” They enter the kitchen as the men leave.
“Not unhappy, just jealous. Julie couldn’t make it. I figured she would have retired by now. I was hoping we would have more time together. However the President had different plans for his Commander of the Pacific Fleet. Seems he thought the troops needed her more than I do. This is what happens when you marry a career driven woman. Chuck, Devon, and Jeffrey get it.” She laughs, “I guess Julie gets it too.” The ladies nod and laugh.
Sarah, Gretchen, and Ellie all get busy cooking. Zondra offers, “Look I’m not much for the cooking, but I can wash the hell out of a pot.”
Sarah points to a sink full of pots and pans, “Have at it Director. They’re all yours.”
Zondra looks at the mountain of dirty pots, pans, and dishes. “Is anyone here going to teach me to keep my big mouth shut?”
As they set the table, Chuck looks up. “Now I remember. I think I left the gravy boats on the shelves in the addition. Come on Jeffrey, keep me company.”
Walking out the backdoor they head over to a small building. It matches the house on a smaller scale. They enter into a nicely finished space. Clearly set up to be a playroom/spare bedroom. There’s a small bathroom with a shower in the corner. The shelves are stocked with toys, games, and puzzles. The bed is made up and covered with rolled up sleeping bags. “Here they are.” Chuck pulls two gravy boats off of a shelving unit filled with spare dishes and other kitchen equipment. “Grab a seat brother. Let’s catch up.”
Jeffrey nods towards the main house. “Don’t you think we should be helping out?”
Chuck nods. “We’ll get there. This may be the only quiet minute we get this weekend. Since you left CI, I haven’t seen you much. How are things going?”
Jeffrey plops into a chair. He looks at Chuck and let’s go with a heavy sigh. “Chuck, I love Gretchen with all my heart. I can’t think of a woman I could love more. You were right when you warned me, she has issues. Nothing that I can’t handle, mind you. Her penchant to be impulsive at times can be fun if it doesn’t lead to disaster. I actually kind of like it. I get to play knight in shining armor when she gets in trouble. I can’t help but think of all the stories you guys told me.
When she found out that she can’t have kids it just about broke her. I tried everything I could think of. I suggested we adopt or foster. She would have none of it. She wanted me to have an heir. She can be stubborn. I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed. But I love her so much and we were always surrounded by the family.
Your kids, Morgan’s, Molly, and Clara were in a revolving door. Gretchen and Momma were always happy to have them. Me too. I was okay, that we couldn’t have our own. I thought we were past it. But recently she’s been stressing over it again. Let’s face it, we’re not about to have kids now.”
Chuck nods, “I understand, I’m sorry for your sadness. Gretchen can be headstrong. I never told you how I was able to get her attention.”
Jeffrey smiles, “She told me. You kicked her ass good and proper. She said it was the kindest thing anyone ever did for her. Believe it or not, you’re part of the problem. You and Sarah.” He sighs. “She always wanted us to have what you have. I tell her how much I love her, but there’s no consoling her. I have no idea what brought all this up again, after all these years. Boss, what should I do?”
Sarah is all smiles as she starts to bark orders. “Okay ladies we have lots of food to prepare. The turkeys are in the oven and out back in the smoker. We need dressing, salad, rolls, and gravy. And veggies, we need veggies. Who’s working on the string bean casserole.” Gretchen raises her hand. “Thanks Sis, I have the cranberry sauce in the fridge. But most importantly we need to catch up. Who wants to go first?” The doorbell chimes. “Okay new question, who has clean hands?”
Ellie wipes her hands on the apron hung around her neck, “I’ll get it.”
Ellie opens the door and shouts. “It’s Alex and Morgan, she has wine.” Ellie hugs them.
A shout comes from the kitchen, “All right Alex. Yay!”
Ellie kisses his cheek, “Morgan, I think I heard Chuck and Jeffrey head out to the playroom. Alex, sisters are in the kitchen.”
Ellie and Alex walk into the kitchen. Sarah turns, her hands covered in mushed up bread. “YAY! The final sister has arrived.”
Alex hugs her. “I take it you still haven’t told Molly she’s not a sister.” Sarah shakes her head. “Come on Alex, I’m working on the dressing. You’re officially the wine pourer and drink holder for those with messy hands.” She holds her hands up. “HELP!”
Zondra waves her wet hands, “Hi Alex.” Alex smiles and waves back with her free hand.
Gretchen waves a celery stalk. “Hi Alex. Where’s Martin?”
Alex, Gretchen, and Sarah laugh. Alex shakes her head. “Still Gretchen. He went out back to join the lazy ones.”
Alex refills the glass and holds it up so Sarah can take a sip. Alex laughs as Sarah tries to take that sip without making a mess.
Sarah shakes her head. “Chuck is not lazy. He’s been helping me get ready for 2 days now.” I think he just wanted to catch up with Jeffrey.
Gretchen suddenly exclaims. “Shit!”
Zondra turns to her. “You have a problem with Jeffrey talking to Chuckles?”
Gretchen sighs, “Him talking to Chuck isn’t the problem. He loves Chuck, looks up to him like a big brother. The problem is I haven’t told Jeffrey the whole truth.”
Sarah pulls the mess off her hands the best she can then wipes the rest on a towel. “Okay kitty, spill.”
The ladies all stop what they’re doing pick up their wine glasses and give their attention to Gretchen.
Gretchen lets out a long breath. “You all know that Jeffrey and I tried for a long time to have kids. I had to watch Chuck and Sarah grow their families and I couldn’t give Jeffrey children. I was so depressed.”
Sarah walks over to hug her. ” Sweetie, that’s all in the past. You know Jeffrey is devoted to you. That didn’t stop him from loving you.”
Gretchen smiles and shakes her head. “Nope, it didn’t, not even a little. He was so supportive and loving. He’s my hero. He didn’t lie to me. He was disappointed, but he made it clear that having me was more important than anything. Sarah you and Chuck saved my life in so many ways. I know Chuck wasn’t happy when you introduced us. I hope he’s changed his mind. I worked so hard to be good for Jeffrey.”
Ellie interrupts her. “Gretchen stop it. Chuck has nothing but love for you, both of you. What you’re talking about happened a long time ago.”
Gretchen nods. “I know, he’s the best. Anyway, Momma and Poppa’s age started catching up to them. That’s when Jeffrey and I quit CI and started working at the restaurant. I had a mom and a dad. I was so happy. They never once made me feel less than because I couldn’t give them grandchildren. I can’t even tell you how their face would light up when Clara and Molly would come to visit and call them Bubbie and Zaydi. Not to mention MJ and LJ, those boys bring love wherever they go. When Stephen and Robin came along, they both went into orbit. It didn’t matter where those kids came from, they were grandchildren, family, loved. Being Aunt Gretchen still makes my heart sing.
Over the years Momma taught me all her recipes. They were happy, we were carrying on their legacy. Ladies, Gretchen Fager Kozlowski became a chef. I know shocking, right? I can’t tell you how happy I was. I had the family I’d always wanted. I won’t lie. Seeing you with kids made me a little jealous. It took me a while to get past the sadness, but I did. I love your kids like my own. When Poppa passed, Momma moved in with us.” The tears are rolling down Gretchen’s cheeks.
“What I haven’t told Jeffrey is that I feel like I let him down. That restaurant is Momma and Poppa’s legacy. I know Momma is gone now, but I have this sense of obligation. I can’t stand that eventually, when Jeffrey and I can no longer carry the load, the restaurant won’t be in family hands anymore. Momma’s recipes will die with me.
We’re wildly successful, so I know we can sell and make a nice profit. Jeffrey wants us to travel. He keeps saying he wants to share the world with me. He has such an eye for wonder. I’ve traveled the world but, I would love to see things through his eyes. Selling means the restaurant wouldn’t be in family hands any longer. I feel like I’m letting down the family who took me in and made me whole.”
Zondra wipes the tears from Gretchen’s cheeks. “G, why haven’t you told Jeffrey how you feel? You know he’ll be there for you.”
Gretchen nods as the tears continue to fall. “I know. That’s the problem. He’ll let me off the hook. I let Momma and Poppa down. I don’t want to be let off the hook. Those people never pressed me. They never said anything about the fact that I wasn’t Jewish.
All they did was love me, just like you guys. Momma told me some of what they went through. They watched their whole family wiped out by hate. Those two lovely people came through it with love and acceptance, held up by their faith. Then they shared those things with me.
They were never victims, survivors maybe, but never victims. First Chuck taught me to let people in. Then Momma and Poppa taught me that living like a victim was wrong. It was spitting in the eyes of the people who loved me.
I converted because of the loveliness of their faith. I never had a need for religion. But this was something more. It was about culture and heritage. There was no way I was going to marry Jeffrey until I was Jewish. He never asked me to do it. It was what I wanted. Now I have to face that I’ve ended that heritage. That restaurant represents everything they were. The warmest, most loving, caring people. Nobody ever left that place hungry, money or no money.”
Tears pouring down her cheeks, Gretchen starts to laugh. The ladies all stare at her. She looks at them and smiles. “Johnny would hate me sharing my lady feelings.” The rest of the group joins her in laughing.
Ellie stops laughing long enough to ask. “Who the hell is Martin?” The laughter gets louder.
“Hey guys am I interrupting anything?”
Chuck smiles when he sees Morgan coming through the door and jumps up. “Never buddy, you’re always welcome.” He hugs him.
Jeffrey gets up to hug him also. “Morgan I was just telling Chuck that Gretchen seems unhappy, but I don’t know what to do.”
Morgan grabs a folding chair from the stack against the wall. He sits down. “I guess I missed something. Seems unhappy? She didn’t tell you she’s unhappy?”
Jeffrey shrugs, “Well, not in so many words.”
Morgan nods, “Okay, exactly how many words then?”
Chuck smiles. Morgan you’re still the best, Buddy. Keeping his thoughts to himself. He watches the master at work.
Jeffrey looks at Chuck, “Boss what’s he getting at?”
Chuck looks surprised. “Why are you asking me. He’s sitting right there.”
Morgan leans back and crosses his legs. “Exactly.”
Jeffrey looks back and forth between them and leans in. “Exactly what? What exactly? I’m very confused.”
Morgan laughs. “That’s because you’re not paying attention.”
“Morgan is trying to tell you that you’re talking to the wrong people.”
Jeffrey leans back and sighs. He sits quiet for a couple of minutes. “I’m scared. I thought the whole no children thing was behind us. What if she’s gotten it in her head again that it upsets me. Momma and Poppa were good at calming her. She loved them so much, and they adored her. Momma felt like she finally had a daughter. She loved how happy Gretchen made me. I really miss them. What if she decides that working in the restaurant isn’t what she wants? What if she finally realized that I’m not what she wants? I’m afraid to ask her what’s going on. I don’t know if I want to hear what she has to say.”
Chuck leans forward. “That fear has to suck. Look you know I don’t lie. I was against you and Gretchen in the beginning. That had nothing to do with who you were as people. I was concerned that she needed some time to heal old wounds. I’ll admit I was wrong. Your loving her, made all the difference. If you tell Sarah I said she was right, I’ll deny it.” The men laugh.
Morgan leans in as well. “What Chuck is trying to say is he doesn’t have all the answers. Sometimes he’s wrong. The big question now is who has the answers in this situation?”
Chuck and Morgan lean back and give Jeffrey space to think. “I get why you guys are partners…. It’s almost like you read each other’s minds.” He sighs. “You mean Gretchen, don’t you? I have to get past my fear and talk with her.”
Chuck leans forward again. “Sounds about right to me. However, I would correct one little thing you said. We’re not at work. In our home, we’re brothers. All three of us in this room are brothers.”
Morgan adds in, “Gretchen is aunt to my kids, and sister to me and Alex. You’ve given her nothing but joy since you came into her life. I know you’re aware of her story. You and your folks gave her what she thought she could never have. You’ve been taking very good care of my sister. I thought this had all been established. You are our brother, family. The only way out is to fight Chuck to the death.”
Chuck laughs, “Very funny. I gave up killing family members last week. Morgan is right. You’re family. Talk to Gretchen. We’ll all be here for both of you however it works out. Something else he pointed out. I can be wrong. However, one thing I’m certain of, Gretchen would never want to live her life without you.”
Jeffrey smiles. “Thanks guys. You know it’s weird I never had any siblings. But thanks to you guys I have the best family a man could have. I was blessed the day Chuck and Sarah Bartowski climbed into my limo.” He stands up. “Can I get a hug. I need to go talk to my wife.” The men hug.
Chuck grabs the gravy boats, “And I have a table to set. Come on Pal, I’m putting you to work. Everybody grab some of those folding chairs.” The three men head out the door and over to the house.
Jeffrey wastes no time. He walks into the kitchen like a man on a mission. Pushing past Ellie he takes Gretchen in his arms and kisses her long and hard. The ladies let out with a collective “WOOOOO!”
Ending the kiss, he takes her by the hand. “Come on wife. We need to talk.
Gretchen is bemused as she follows him. “Yes Dear.” The ladies let out with another “WOOOOO!” Gretchen turns back and sticks her tongue out at the group. The ladies laugh.
Chuck and Morgan are in the dining room setting the table when Jeffrey leads Gretchen towards the back door. Gretchen waves, “Hi Morgan, I’ll be back for a hug in a minute.” Morgan smiles at Chuck and gives him a thumbs up. Chuck smiles back as he sets out the forks.
Jeffrey leads Gretchen to the back yard. “Retch, we need to talk. Let’s sit out here. It’s a nice day. Not cold like Chicago.” They sit on a bench overlooking the pool.
Gretchen gives him a dirty look, “Sweetheart, I love your pet name for me. But I won’t like it if you use it around the family.” “I know Baby, I won’t. We need to talk.”
“Sweetheart, we’re guests. We need to help out. Can’t this wait?”
“See, that’s exactly why we need to talk. I know something is going on with you. But every time I try to talk about it, you find some excuse not to.” Gretchen looks down at her hands in her lap. “Baby, please! Are you afraid to tell me you don’t want me anymore? Do you not want to work in the restaurant, is that it? Please Retch, want me. I don’t want to lose you.”
Gretchen turns and looks at her husband, tears running down her cheeks. “Are you out of your mind? Try and leave me. I dare you.” She presses her lips together. She reaches out to stroke his cheek. “I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt you. I love you. I love our life together.” With a deep sigh she continues. “Yes, the restaurant is the problem…”
Jeffrey jumps up. “Retch, we can sell it. Right now. Whatever you want Baby. I just want you to be happy.”
Gretchen shakes her head and smiles. “Kozlowski, do I have to tie you down to this bench so I can finish a sentence?”
He sits, “Sorry Baby. I’ll be good.”
“The problem with the restaurant is that I feel like I let Momma and Poppa down. That place is their legacy, and I didn’t give them grandchildren. We don’t have someone to keep the restaurant in the family. They were so good to me, and I let them down.”
Jeffrey gets down on his knees so he can look into Gretchen’s downturned face. “Baby in all our years together, have I ever lied to you?” She shakes her head. “Good then you know that I’m telling you the truth when I say my folks loved you. You were the daughter they always wanted. Poppa doted on you. And Momma, OY! That woman thought you were an angel sent to bless her life.
She took your side in every argument. God forbid, I say something negative about her Gretchen. She bragged about you to every customer. ‘My Gretchen, such a gem. My Gretchen, who could have a better daughter? My Gretchen this, My Gretchen that.’ She told you every family secret, all her recipes. No one else has those recipes. She never told anyone else what she went through.”
Gretchen blurts out, “Don’t you get it? That’s the problem. I have no one to pass all Momma’s secrets to. I have no one to tell their story to, what they went through. I let her down.” Tears running down her cheeks, She wails, “IT’S NOT MY FAULT!” She quiets her voice. “It’s not my fault an asshole drug dealer stabbed me. Baby, I swear I didn’t know the scar tissue would prevent us from having kids. I would have told you. I swear”
Jeffrey takes her hands in his. “I know Baby, and You’re right, it’s not your fault. So why are you punishing yourself? If Momma were here right now. What would she tell you?”
Gretchen starts to sob. “She would take me in her arms and tell me she loves me. That I couldn’t possibly let her down. She would tell me that God is much smarter than us and I should trust that everything will be okay. She would tell me to pray. I miss her so much.”
Jeffrey smiles. “I guess I have it a little easier than you. I don’t miss her as much.” Gretchen looks at him, shocked. “How can I miss her as much when she’s right here in front of me? Momma taught you. You have all the love she had. Whenever I hug you, I’m hugging her. I have to admit, there are certain hugs I give you when I don’t want Momma in the room.”
Gretchen laughs and grabs the front of his shirt. “Get up here and give me a kiss.”
She kisses him. “I’m sorry I made things so rough for you recently. I should have told you what was going on. Do you forgive me?” “It’s okay, you needed some time. I’m here now.”
Gretchen smiles and puts her hand on his cheek. “You know Poppa did a pretty good job too. I get to enjoy his warmth and humor through you as well. You’re right. The way to honor Momma is to handle it the way she would, with love, grace, and faith. She would also help my sisters in the kitchen. I should go in. Thank you for not letting me hang on to this. You’re a good husband.”
He stands and offers his hand to help her stand. “I can’t take all the credit. The Boss and his little brother gave me a piece of their minds. Trust me no more secrets. Those guys are merciless.”
Gretchen stands and hugs him hard. She sighs. “We are lucky, aren’t we. We have such good people in our lives. Trust me, you got off easy, no broken nose and you’re walking. Come on, let’s go inside. I think I owe hugs to a couple of nerds.”
Walking back into the house. “Hon, you go help the boys. I’m going to freshen up. I’ll be right out.”
Jeffrey takes his wife in his arms, “Retch, are you okay?”
Gretchen smiles. “I am. It may be weird to some. Momma hated it. ‘Why do you call her that. Retch, a beautiful woman, and you call her that. Bah! I taught you better.’ But Every time you call me Retch, I hear: Gretchen, I love you.”
Jeffrey kisses her. “See, that proves you have good hearing.”
Releasing Gretchen, he joins Morgan and Chuck setting up. “Thanks guys, you were right. Talking to her was the right thing to do. She’s concerned about what will happen to the restaurant when we decide to retire. She feels like she let the folks down because we couldn’t have kids.”
Chuck looks at him and tilts his head to the side. “Hmmm, I can see how that might upset Gretchen. She didn’t have much of a family growing up.
Your parents were very important to her. She loved them.”
Morgan squints his eyes at Chuck. “I know that look Pal. What’s going on in that head of yours?”
Chuck shrugs, “I’m not sure yet. I’ll let you know when I know.”
Gretchen comes out of the restroom and immediately takes Morgan in a hug. “You too Bartowski. Get over here.” Chuck joins the hug. “Thanks guys. I couldn’t ask for better brothers. Thanks for having Jeffrey’s back. I have business in the kitchen. Thanks again.”
Walking into the kitchen she puts her arms around Sarah from behind and whispers softly. “You’re the best sister ever. You found me a nerd as good as yours. Thank you.” She kisses Sarah on the cheek.
Sarah smiles. “Whispering sweet nothings in my ear is not going to get you out of work. Those veggies aren’t going to chop themselves. If you want dressing and gravy to go with the turkey, get chopping. Just be glad this meal is for the Bartowski clan only. We’ll be catering the CI dinner tomorrow.”
Gretchen picks up the knife. “Yes ma’am. But you’re the knife wizard.”
“I don’t want to hear your excuses, or your ass kissing. Get going, Chef Kozlowski. chop, chop.”
Gretchen fills her family in on what went down. The chat is light, and laughter filled. Sarah is prepping the salad, okay time to find out what’s going on. “So Ellie, how’s Clara doing?”
Ellie slams the pot with the potatoes down. Everyone turns to look at her. She stares back. “Okay, I have something on my mind.” She stares at Sarah. “It’s all your husband’s fault.”
Sarah stops what she’s doing. “I’m trying to decide if I should remind you that he was your brother first.”
Ellie sighs. “Yep, and therein lies the problem. Clara is just like Chuck. I should never have let them spend so much time together. From the moment she opened her eyes she adored her Uncle Chuck. She graduated at the top of her class. Devon and I hoped she would go on to medical school.
She’s been working with us in the clinic. She’s fantastic with the kids. Her diagnostic skills are exceptional. The problem is she doesn’t seem to want to go anywhere. She goes to work, comes home, and goes into her room. She’s a beautiful woman. A twenty-seven-year-old woman who’s still living with her parents. She rarely dates, she just lies in bed listening to music and cuddling that damn unicorn. It’s like Chuck all over again.” Gretchen gives her a hug. “I hope you’re right.”
Ellie stares at her. “Are you joking? Did you not hear what I said?”
Zondra dries her hands and walks over to hug her. “I agree with G. You can’t get much better than Chuck. He’s the most capable person I know.
Not to mention the most loving.”
Ellies eyes flair with anger. “You’re not listening. My daughter is wasting her life.”
Sarah smiles, “You mean like Chuck did? Exactly like the self-made millionaire who employs how many people in how many countries? And loves each and every person he meets? Yeah, you’re right he sucks. Whoever raised him really screwed that up.”
Ellies eyes narrow as she stares at Sarah. “You know I’m still the big sister.” The ladies laugh.
Sarah continues, “El, we get it. Fear can be very powerful. Especially when it comes to the people we love. It can make us want to try to control our environment to make everyone safe. Trust me, I know from experience. The only problem is that it doesn’t work. Clara is an incredible woman, just like Chuck is an incredible man. Her moment will come.”
Ellie sits down and growls. “When did you start taking lessons from Devon?”
Sarah takes a sip of wine. “And here I thought I was channeling your loser brother.” Ellie grunts.
Zondra laughs. “That’s exactly what the General would have said.”
They all laugh when Gretchen offers, “And he’d be right.”
Alex sheds a tear as she laughs. “He would say that. I miss Dad.”
In a chorus they all say. “Me too.”
Gretchen asks Sarah. “Will Ilse be joining us?”
Sarah shakes her head. “Unfortunately no. She’s in France to spend time with her family. She’s retired, but she still comes into CI to hang with us.”
The doorbell rings. “I got it Hon.” Chuck opens the door. His face lights up. “Molly!”
Molly rushes in and throws her arms around him. “Hey, big brother. I’m here to get my special magical hugs.”
Chuck laughs, “You do know you’re not seven anymore.”
“What does that have to do with anything? Your hugs are still just as magical as the very first one you gave me.”
“Hmmm, have you been eating, okay? Where’s Jimmy? Is he treating you right? I can have him transferred to the office in Siberia. Do you need anything?”
Molly laughs, then throws her arms around his neck, and kisses his cheek. “Chuck, do I once again have to remind you that you’re my brother-inlaw, not my father?” Chuck smiles and looks in her eyes. “Not that you haven’t always been there for me.”
She sighs, “Yes Dad! I’m eating fine. Jimmy is on his way, he got called into the office for an emergency. Your office I might add. He’s treating me wonderfully well. Even if you weren’t his boss, he would still be good to me. He takes very good care of me. I have everything I need. He loves me as much as you love my big sis.” She giggles, “Plus I’m pretty sure he remembers that first date with the shotgun reception. Satisfied? Do you really have a branch in Siberia?”
Chuck smiles and pulls her in for a hug. “If you’re happy, then I’m satisfied. I’m sure you don’t want to find out, it’s awfully cold there. You may want to go into the kitchen there are a couple of surprises in there.”
The doorbell rings again as Molly walks into the kitchen. “Aunt Gretchen! Aunt Zondra!” She rushes into the kitchen to hug them.
Ellie looks surprised, “What am I, chopped liver?”
Molly laughs as she hugs Zondra. “Aunt Ellie, I saw you yesterday. We had dinner at your house. I hardly ever get to see Auntie Super Spy.” She switches to hug Gretchen. “I haven’t seen Aunt Gretchen in like, forever.” She jumps up and down. “This is such a good surprise.”
Sarah adds. “Don’t feel bad Ellie, I guess I’m unimportant also.”
Molly stomps her foot. “Stop it you guys. Aunt Gretchen have you been teaching them Bubbie’s guilt trips?”
The ladies all laugh. “Get over here and hug your big sister and I’ll absolve you.”
Sarah takes Molly in a warm embrace and closes her eyes. She sighs. “Molly, I don’t think I’m ever going to let you go.”
Molly hugs her back. “Aunt Alex, nothing to say?”
Alex smiles a knowing smile. “Nah, I figured you’d get to me eventually. Let Sarah enjoy you.”
Ellie shakes her head. “Not me. I’m not going to forgive you until you name your first born after me. An act of contrition is required.”
Molly hugs Alex then walks over to Ellie to hug her. “Funny you should put it that way.”
The kitchen gets quiet. Sarah quietly asks. “Put it what way Sweetheart?”
Molly acts nonchalant. “You know that whole first-born thing.”
“Molly Mason, are you trying to tell us something?”
Molly gets a big grin on her face. “Why yes, Aunt Sarah, I am.”
The guys hear the screams and come running into the room. Chuck looks around and sees a bunch of screaming women jumping up and down passing Molly around for hugs.
Molly sees Chuck and runs over to throw her arms around him. “Hi Uncle Chuck.”
“Wow, that was the fastest demotion ever. I went from “Dad” to brother-law to Uncle in fifteen minutes. What did I do wrong?”
Molly laughs. “Nothing. But Jimmy did something right.” The ladies crack up laughing.
Sarah walks over to hug Chuck. “What our little sister is trying to tell you is that you’re going to be an uncle again.” She whispers in his ear “Congratulations Grandpa.”
Chuck exclaims, “HOLY SHIT!” He looks at Molly who’s head is bobbing up and down wildly. “Yep, what Sarah said.”
Chuck releases Sarah and picks Molly up off her feet to hug her. “I’m…” Tears start to run down his cheeks. “…I’m so happy for you, for us. I’m sorry that Emma isn’t here to share this happiness with us. But I’m sure she’s with us.”
Molly kisses his cheek. “Yeah, I miss Mom too. But she left me with the best sister and brother in the world. I feel her too.” Morgan taps him on the shoulder, “Hey, you’re not the only new uncle here, step aside.”
Morgan hugs Molly. He’s followed by Jeffrey.
Gretchen yells out. “I’m gonna kill you kid, you just made me a great-aunt, I’m too young to be a great.” Everyone laughs.
Zondra pulls out her phone and presses speed dial. “Hello, Great-Aunt Julie, someone wants to talk to you.” She hands the phone to Molly.
“Hi Aunt Julie, how are you? Why did she call you great-aunt? Well because you’re my aunt which means when I have the baby, you’ll be a greataunt.” The whole room can hear the scream when Molly moves the phone away from her ear. “I’m sorry you can’t be here too. I understand duty. Trust me, Grandpa John told me all the military stories. I hope to see you soon too. I’m fine, Jimmy is fine. I’d better pass the phone. Everyone wants to talk to you. I love you too, stay safe.” She passes the phone back to Zondra.
Molly looks over Chuck’s shoulder and sees her husband Jimmy standing there. His face is frozen in a look of astonishment.
Molly puts her fingernail between her teeth, “Uh oh.”
She takes her finger out of her mouth. “Hi Hon. How did it go at work? Really sucks working on a holiday, huh?”
“Molly, we agreed to tell the family together.”
She pushes past her uncles to throw her arms around him and kisses him. “I know.” She puts on a pouty face and whines just a little. “I know Sweetheart, but I got here, and my sister and all my aunts were here. Look even Aunt Gretchen and Aunt Zondra.” Molly looks Jimmy in the eyes. “Please forgive me. I got so excited. I couldn’t wait.”
Ellie interjects. “Again, I’m chopped liver.” Everyone laughs.
Jimmy puts his hands on his hips, “Forgive you huh? Like I have a choice. I’m surrounded by the meanest people ever. If I don’t forgive you, I won’t get any turkey.”
Chuck exclaims, “Hey! Who’re you calling mean? Forgive her Jimmy. I’ll consider it a personal favor.”
Jimmy looks Molly in the eyes, “And now you use my boss against me, nice.” He scoops her up in his arms and kisses her. He puts her down and raises his arms. “Hey everyone, I’m gonna be a dad.”
They all gather around to hug the couple. After a couple of minutes of celebration. The doorbell rings again. Chuck yells out. “I’ll get it.”
The hum in the kitchen is loud. Sarah has to raise her voice. “All right folks, back to work. We have a hungry crowd that’s going to be arriving shortly. Ellie, would you get the appetizers on the table please?”
Chuck opens the door and is knocked back two feet when Clara attacks him. He’s barely able to stay on his feet when she slams into him wrapping her arms around him. “Uncle Chuck.”
He hugs her back. “Hi Clara, It’s good to see you too.” He waves his right hand. “Hi Devon, glad you didn’t have to work at the hospital today.”
Devon walks in past the hugging couple. “I’m still on call. I don’t even remember what a day off is. Smells good in here. Where’s the food?”
Ellie walks out of the kitchen carrying two large platters. “Right here, my hubby with the bottomless stomach.” She spreads her arms balancing the large plates and gives him a kiss.”
“Babe, why are you giving me a hard time? You know I work out hard so you can have the hardbody you deserve. I have to fuel all that dedication somehow.”
Ellie laughs, “Yes Honey, I know, I appreciate it. Come eat.” She puts down a platter covered with cheeses, deli meats and crackers, a small bowl of mustard in the middle. The second platter is covered in mini quiches.
Gretchen follows her in from the kitchen with two more platters covered in Polish appetizers. Putting them down she leans up to kiss Devon on the cheek.
“Gretchen, great to see you. I didn’t know you would be here.”
“And yet here we are. Chuck flew us in, to surprise Sarah.”
“Us?”
Gretchen heads over to Clara. “Your Aunt Z is in the kitchen, and my niece is ignoring her favorite aunt. Molly is in there too. She has a huge surprise.”
Clara smiles, “So she finally told you guys. I’m so excited.”
Chuck turns her to face her. “Wait a minute, you knew?”
Clara shrugs, “Of course I knew. I was the second to know after Jimmy. She is my best friend you know. She’s, my Morgan.”
Chuck smiles. “I’m glad, everyone needs a Morgan.” Morgan smiles from ear to ear.
Clara whispers in Chuck’s ear. “Can we talk later?” Chuck nods. She releases him and turns to hug Gretchen. “Ignore my favorite aunt, never gonna happen. I’m so happy to see you. I miss you and Uncle Jeffrey so much.”
Alex walks out of the kitchen. “Aha, so the truth is out. You told me I was your favorite aunt.”
Clara laughs as she hugs Alex. “Uncle Chuck told me I’m allowed to have as many favorite aunts and uncles as I want. Of course, he added as long as he’s number one.”
There’s a tap on her shoulder and Clara turns to see Jeffrey on one knee. He takes her hand in his and kisses it. “It doth make my heart swell with gratitude to be in the presence of the Mistress of the Magic Forest. Your beauty surpasses itself each time that mine eyes are blessed to behold your visage.”
Clara giggles like a little girl. “Rise Sir Jeffrey. Embrace your niece that dost love you greatly.” Jeffrey stands up and she hugs him hard, planting a kiss on his cheek. “It’s such a good surprise to see you here.”
Jeffery hugs her back hard. “I’ve missed you too my little sous chef. It’s a good thing your Uncle Chuck will do anything for free Polish food.”
Clara extends an arm to invite Gretchen into the hug. “I miss you two so much. My summers working with you and Bubbie and Zaydi in the restaurant were the best times of my life. I heard Aunt Zondra is in the kitchen. I’d better go say hi. I’ll talk to you both later.” She squeezes them hard. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Devon is standing in the dining room watching Chuck and Morgan work on getting things ready, as he munches appetizers. “Hey Bro, mind if I turn the game on?”
“Sure Devon, but why don’t you use the TV in the playroom. We’re using the living room as an extra dining room.”
“Thanks Bro, give me a yell when it’s time to eat.” He loads a small plate with quiche and other small bites, then heads out the backdoor.
Clara comes out of the kitchen. “Uncle Chuck, can you spare a minute?”
“For my favorite Mistress of the Magic Forest, of course. Your dad is outside. Let’s go up to my office.”
Clara follows Chuck into the home office and takes a seat. He closes the door. He sits down and takes her hand in his. “I’m guessing this is something you can’t talk to your parents about. Remember our agreement. If you tell me something that puts you in danger I will help you, but I’ll also tell them.”
Clara smiles, “I know Uncle Chuck. Nothing dangerous, just frustrating. Mom is all over me because I didn’t go to medical school. She wants to know what I’m going to do with my life. Dad is mellow, but Mom is making me crazy.”
Chuck smiles, “Let me guess, you’re working on your five-year plan but can’t decide on a font.”
Clara gives him a weird look. “HUH?”
He chuckles, “Never mind, inside joke. I know Ellie can be a little overprotective.” Clara gives him a look. “Okay, a lot overprotective. I can’t argue too much against her style. She raised me. I did okay.”
Clara smiles. “I love you Uncle Chuck. You always look at the good side of things.”
“Tell me, what’s the good side of Clara?”
“I dunno. I mean, I like working at the clinic. Since Dad became Chief of Surgery at the hospital, he doesn’t really have the time. I like supporting Mom and her research is fascinating. I love the kids at CI, but…”
“But…?”
“It just doesn’t fill me up. You know what I mean. I like doing it. I love that I get to see you, Aunt Sarah and Molly, and my cousins whenever I want, but…?”
“But…?” Clara sighs. “Tell me Clara Doll, when was the last time you felt ‘filled up’?”
Clara’s face brightens and her smile grows large. “I love how you and Uncle Jeffrey let me be a little girl sometimes.” She pauses and sighs again.
“The last time I felt filled up was when I worked with Bubbie and Aunt Gretchen at the restaurant. I loved working with my hands. I loved when Bubbie and I would work together to create new dishes. Uncle Chuck when the customers would say how good the food was…I felt… I felt like when you used to swing me around in the air when I was little. It made me feel like the time you gave me Beauty, all warm and happy and magical inside. I miss Bubbie and Zaydi. They were the best.”
Chuck smiles, “I miss them too. Any idea what I can do to help?”
“Maybe you could talk to Mom and ask her to cut me some slack?”
Chuck considers the request. “I can try, but it’s never worked for me before. Would you mind if I discuss this with Sarah? Sometimes your mom hears her better than me. She may have a thought or two.”
“Of course I don’t mind. If she weren’t so busy cooking, I would have asked her to join us. You picked a good aunt for me. I love her lots.” Chuck gets up and opens his arms. Clara jumps up and hugs him tight. “Mmmm, still the best hugs ever.”
“Funny I was thinking the same thing. Make sure you tell your aunt that you love her. She never gets tired of hearing that. Give me a little time to mull this over before I talk to my sister. She tends to be touchy when it comes to you. I have to figure out just the right approach”
“You’ve already helped Unk. You listened without judging me. You’re still the best uncle ever.”
“Mmmm hmmm. Said by every niece, who’s uncle is about to step into the jaws of death for them.”
Returning to the group downstairs Chuck is worried. He walks around the house letting his body use the energy created by his mind. I have to figure out how to help Clara. His meandering takes him into the kitchen. He looks up and sees the ladies working. Sarah sees him. “Chuck, are you okay Hon?” He presses his lips together and shrugs. “Baby, is something wrong?”
He looks around the room. Sarah, Zondra, Gretchen, Alex. Molly and Ellie are sharing a concerned look. He shakes his head. “No nothing wrong.
No reason to be concerned.” He looks around. “You’re in the kitchen. You’re all in the kitchen.”
Sarah walks over and touches his forehead. “Hon, are you okay? You know this is our kitchen. Do you need to talk to Ellie, privately?”
Chuck looks at Ellie. “I love you, Sis. I do need to talk to you, but not right now. And not for the reason Sarah thinks. Sarah, Alex, we need to get
Morgan. I want a Partner’s meeting.”
Sarah’s concerned look grows deeper. “Chuck, do you know what day it is? We’re at home, it’s Thanksgiving Day.”
A huge smile grows on Chuck’s face. He picks Sarah up and swings her around. “Baby, I’m fine, and I love you.” He kisses her. “Let’s go, our office, upstairs. Ladies can you do without them for fifteen minutes?” Ellie nods. “But we will have a discussion when you get back.”
He puts Sarah down and grabs her hand. “Come on Alex, I need that Casey brain and vote.” He heads up the stairs. “Morgan, Partners Meeting. Let’s go.” He heads up the stairs, Sarah, Alex, and Morgan close behind.
True to his word Chuck and the group return in under fifteen minutes. The group is laughing and smiling. Morgan smacks Chuck on the back.
“Great idea Buddy. Do you ever get tired of making us richer?”
At the bottom of the steps Sarah turns and gives him a big hug. “I have to get back to work. But first I want a kiss from the best and smartest husband ever.”
Chuck kisses her. Sarah returns to the kitchen to find Clara has joined the ladies. She takes her in a hug and whispers in her ear. “You have the best uncle ever created.”
Clara pulls her head back and gives her a weird look. “Aunt Sarah, I already knew that.”
Sarah laughs. “You thought you did. Now you’ll know for sure.”
Clara looks confused. Ellie walks out of the kitchen. “Let’s go Chuck, time for our chat.”
Chuck sighs. “Ellie, I’m fine.”
Ellie smiles, “I believe you little brother. Give me ten minutes to help me feel better.” Chuck grunts and heads up the stairs.
Once in a private place, Ellie runs Chuck through her cognitive tests. “Ok little brother, I don’t see any indications of side effects. Any chance you’re going tell me what’s going on?”
Chuck pulls Ellie into a big hug. “Yes, but not right now. Thank you for worrying about me. I feel very loved.”
Ellie screws up her face like Chuck said something ridiculous. “Well of course you’re very loved. However, I’m not crazy about all the secrets flying around here. I saw Clara pull you up here earlier. Now Sarah is whispering to my daughter. Any chance you’re going to let me in on the big secret?”
Chuck smiles at Ellie. “Sis, you know I can never repay how you and then Devon looked after me. I’ve done my best to prove that you weren’t wasting your effort. I wanted to show you how much I appreciate you, by being a good man. Have I let you down in any way?”
Ellie sighs. “Not even a little. I’m very proud of you. I know Mom was too. If Dad were here, he’d say ‘You’re Aces, Charles, Aces’.”
Chuck takes a deep breath and lets it out in a long sigh. “Sis, there is something I have to tell you. I’ve been putting it off because I know it’ll hurt you. Please sit.”
“Chuck, you’re worrying me. Is Clara, okay?”
Chuck smiles a semi-sweet smile. “She’s okay, just looking for her path. This isn’t about Clara. Sis, when Mom passed away, I guess it’s been almost a year ago. Another secret died with her. It seems that Mom had a secret lover for many years.”
Ellie’s eyes go wide. “Chuck what are you saying?”
Chuck smiles and takes her hand. “Ellie, you thought you saw Dad die when Shaw shot him…”
Ellie’s eyes go wide, “THOUGHT?”
“Take it easy Sis, you know how Dad was. His paranoia didn’t go down when that whole thing with Shaw happened. He went deep into hiding. Mom told me before she passed away. She and Dad were seeing each other secretly for years. She told me that he was watching over us all along. Ellie, he was at my wedding.”
Ellie, gasps. “You saw Dad and didn’t tell me?”
Chuck shakes his head. “He sent a waiter to deliver a message to Sarah. We never saw him. He congratulated us and …” Chuck sits back, “…he told Sarah to remind you that he loves you. Every time she told you that Dad would love you and would be proud of you, she was relaying his message to you.”
Ellie’s head is shaking side to side, tears pouring off her cheeks. “OH MY GOD! All these years, I thought I got him killed. I thought my stupidity killed my father. HOW! How could you keep this from me?”
Chuck sits back slumped in his chair and looks at his grieving sister. Ellie picks her head up and he could see the anguish on her face. She stares at Chuck and in a cold mean tone, “Damn you and your spy shit…how could you?”
“That note was the last time I heard from Dad. Everything else I know Mom told me when she was sick. He knew that we named Stephen after him. Turns out she would show him pictures of all the kids whenever she saw him.”
Ellie’s head is spinning. “Chuck, please, help me understand.”
He let’s out a long sigh. “Ellie, I wish I could. I don’t get it myself. I know that Mom and Dad were there for us. I’m positive that if we needed him
Dad would have been there. But… he was more Orion than Stephen. I guess he never told you that he had the Intersect.” Ellie’s look of shock tells
Chuck he’s right. “The thing is, he had a very early prototype. And he didn’t have you to look after him. His perception consisted of a surreal understanding of the world and the people in his life. I can’t explain his actions. But I can assure you that he loved us the best way he knew how.”
Ellie sighs, “I get that little brother. Dad was one of a kind. I guess I just wish I knew I hadn’t killed him.”
Chuck takes Ellie’s hand. “Ellie, even if Dad had died that day in the subway tunnels, it wasn’t on you. It was Shaw. He shot Dad in cold blood.
He did it to short circuit my Intersect by messing with my emotions. It was the Ring that shot Dad, not you, not me.
You believed you were protecting me and Dad. I believed Shaw was an agent I could trust. We were all fooled, including Sarah and John. They were veteran agents and he fooled them. He had Diane Beckman fooled as well. This isn’t on us.”
Ellie nods, “I know all that. I guess it would have been nice to spend time with him again.” She smiles a semi-sweet smile. “I’m glad he got to be at both our weddings and meet our kids, even if it was just in photos.”
Chuck nods, “I’m glad Mom got to spend time with him. They really did love each other. They thought we were important enough to watch over us. But I guess saving the world is important too.
Sis, I know we had a rough start. But look where we are. We’re successful, We have beautiful families, wonderful friends, we have each other. Not to mention you have a great boss. Ellie smiles.
Big Sis, I would never be where I am without you. Neither would my kids. Sarah and I have always depended on you to get over the rough spots.
Let’s go downstairs and be thankful for all the love that surrounds us.”
Ellie stands up. “We’ll talk more about this later, but for now Little Brother get up here and give me a hug.” Chuck stands and the siblings hug. I love you Chuck, I couldn’t have a better brother.”
“I love you too Sis, ditto. We’d better get downstairs. By now Sarah thinks you found something wrong and is waiting at the bottom of the stairs trying to decide if she should come up.”
Ellie laughs, “Yeah right.”
The reach the top of the stairs and look down. Sarah is looking up at them. Chuck laughs “Yeah right.”
Ellie laughs, “I guess you know your wife.” As they walk down the stairs, “He’s fine Sarah, we were just chatting.”
“Well it’s about time you joined us. The kids are home, and the food is ready. Plus we’re all starving. Get your asses down here.”
A beautiful young woman walks over to stand next to Sarah. The resemblance is obvious. “Dad, I can’t believe you kept Aunt Ellie all to yourself.”
“Excuse me young lady, you haven’t seen your father in months and the first thing you do is give me grief?”
“OY! Bubbie strikes from the grave.” She bounds up the final steps to hug Chuck. “Hi, Daddy, I missed you too.” She moves over to hug Ellie. “I’ve missed you too Auntie Awesome.”
Chuck gets to the bottom of the stairs and kisses Sarah. “Where’s my son. Let me guess he’s out in the playhouse with Devon watching the game.”
There’s a tap on his shoulder and Chuck turns and is immediately taken into a hug by a handsome young man. “Wrong again Original Bartowski.
I’ve been standing right here waiting to give my dad a hug.”
Chuck hugs his son hard. “Stephen, good to have you home. This hug is from Grandpa John also. I know he’s proud of you. How was the drive down?”
“It was great Dad. I love driving your classic Mustang. All the kids at school are totally jealous.”
“He whispers in Stephen’s ear. “Have you been looking after your little sister?”
Robin walks down the stairs her arm around Ellie’s waist.
Stephen shakes his head and laughs. “Dad, Robin is a big girl. She can take care of herself.” He looks Chuck in the eye and nods a little.
Chuck messes his hair and kisses his cheek. “Yes, of course you’re right. Your mom and I are so proud that you’re both on the Dean’s list.”
Robin steps over and hugs him. “Yes Dad, he’s watching out for me. The guys on campus are terrified of him. The Kung Fu and fencing classes he teaches are well known.”
Sarah laughs, “I suppose you keep your black belt well hidden?”
Robin shrugs, “It’s there when I need it. So far, I haven’t needed it. I suppose being the captain of the pistol and rifle teams doesn’t hurt.”
Sarah laughs, “Chuck it looks like we raised two warriors. Your Grandpa John is probably smiling wherever he is.”
“Warriors are fine as long as they keep those grades up and stay away from recruiters.”
Zondra walks past carrying a platter of food. “No problem there Chuckles. Seems the DCI has put out the word that Bartowski’s are off limits.”
Chuck smiles. “Thanks Madam Director, make sure you keep your wife away from them as well. These two have their own paths to find.”
The doorbell rings. Stephen opens the door. “Cuz’s How ya doing?” He hugs Morgan Jr. (MJ) and his wife Denise. Their twins John Alex and LG
(Little Gretchen) come through the door followed by Little John (LJ) and his wife Yvette, and their three kids; MC (Morgan Charles), Alexandra, and Eugene (Yvette’s father’s name) and the hugs are nonstop.”
Gretchen is overjoyed to see her namesake and takes her in a big hug. I can’t believe you were whining Fager, you are one lucky woman. So
much love. Who would have thought Carina Miller could be so blessed. Her smile is wide as tears of joy run down her face as she enjoys hug after hug.
Sarah takes the food and drink they brought with them. “Okay people everyone grab a seat. Chuck has an announcement before we begin. Clara go out back and get your dad.”
Everyone is present, they all take seats. Sarah returns from the kitchen and sits in the chair to Chucks right. “Okay Hon, you’re up.”
Chuck stands up and smiles at his family. “I can’t tell you how happy I am to have you all here. Sarah has been cooking up a storm and I can see that you’ve all added to our delicious bounty. As usual we’ll go around and tell something we’re thankful for. Before that, I have an announcement. It that will make some people very happy, and one person freak out. Sorry Sis.”
Zondra calls out, “Sis who, which Sister?”
Chuck laughs, “Hang on I think it’ll become obvious. As you all know Carmichael Industries branched out some years back and created Master Chef Julian’s Frozen food line. In a very recent partners meeting, I mean like an hour ago, CI has decided to expand its’ frozen food line.
Assuming it’s agreeable to the owners we will be acquiring the Staropolska Restaurant. We will then start the process of creating the Bubbie and
Zaydi Polish food line of frozen delicacies.”
Gretchen looks at her husband. “Jeffrey, what’s this about?”
Jeffrey is as caught off guard as his wife, he shrugs. “You got me Sweetheart, first I’m hearing about this.”
Chuck continues. “The present owners will retain twenty percent of the restaurant and all new product lines. That is contingent on whether or not they can find and train someone to take over the restaurant while they focus on creating the new line.”
Clara jumps up. “Me, that’s me, teach me.”
Ellie jumps up as well. “Sit down young lady. You’re going back to school. I didn’t raise a busboy. Sit down.”
Gretchen angrily responds to Ellie, “That’s what you think of me and Jeffrey…busboys? That restaurant is Momma and Poppa’s legacy. We would be proud to leave it to Clara. Although, it would have been nice to get a heads up.”
Ellie’s lips are pursed tightly. Devon takes her hand. “Take a breath Babe. Remember who you’re with. This is family.”
Ellie grunts and sits down. “Sorry Gretchen, that’s not what I meant. I just always thought that Clara would follow in our footsteps and be a doctor.”
Clara gets up and hugs Ellie from behind. “Mom, I love you. I love how you and Daddy help people. But look at Uncle Chuck and Aunt Sarah, look how many people they help. They’re not doctors. Look at Uncle Morgan and Aunt Alex, could any people be more loving and giving. I loved working with Bubbie and Auntie G in the restaurant. They fed so many people who were hungry.” Ellie’s face shows her displeasure.
Chuck interjects, “Don’t be so quick to jump Clara. There are strings attached. The first string is that Jeffrey and Gretchen have to agree to this.
You will have to meet certain conditions agreed to by the partners. First, while you work with your aunt and uncle in the restaurant. You will also get your master’s degree in restaurant and business management.
You’ll go to a school approved by your parents. The company will cover all school costs. In addition you will accept Gretchen and Jeffrey as your guardians.” Clara makes a face. “I don’t care if you’re an adult. We all need guidance and support at times. You will live in their home if they’ll have you. That means, you slack off they send you home.
In return for accepting these constraints and completing your degree, you will receive a twenty percent stake in the business. If you don’t finish your degree, you will be required to pay back every penny with interest.”
Chuck sits down. “Let’s not take too long. The ladies have been slaving over this meal all morning. Let’s get to eating before it’s ruined. We can do our thanks while we eat.” The room is quiet as all this information is absorbed.
Ellie is the first to speak. She looks at Chuck and let’s go of a heavy sigh. “You love putting me on the spot don’t you little brother. I also know you love Clara like your own, and you want her to be happy. Devon?” He nods. “Fine, I know you’re an adult and don’t need our permission, but you have it anyway. Assuming Gretchen and Jeffrey are willing to take on the hassle of a Junior Chuck in skirts.”
Clara screams and kisses Devon and hugs Ellie. “Thanks Mom, I promise I’ll make you and Dad proud. I’m gonna make all of you proud.”
Sarah stands up. “Okay, we can finish this conversation later. For right now I need someone to help me bring that food out here before it gets ruined.” Some of the group heads into the kitchen to help Sarah.
Clara falls into Chucks lap hugging him tightly. She kisses his cheek over and over. “Thank you, Uncle Chuck, you’re the best. I feel just like I did the day you and Aunt Sarah brought me Beauty. All filled up with magic and love. I’m gonna make you so proud of me. I’m gonna make Bubbie and
Zaydi proud too.”
“Clara Doll, I’m already proud of you. Don’t forget to thank Morgan and Alex, Sarah too. You realize that if this works out, the four of us are your bosses, and your mom won’t be there as a buffer. Running a restaurant is hard work with long hours. Stephen will be starting his MBA degree next year. He might enjoy sharing that journey with his cousin.”
“I will Uncle Chuck, I’ll thank them, and I’ll talk to Stephen. You know Aunt Sarah told me you were the best uncle ever. She was right. You helped me and took care of Mom, all at once.”
Gretchen taps Clara on the shoulder. “Okay, Chuck Junior, time to help in the kitchen, I’m gonna need that lap.”
Clara get up and hugs Gretchen and Jeffrey then heads into the kitchen. Gretchen falls into Chuck’s lap and kisses him. Jeffrey puts his hands on his shoulders. She hugs him as she says. “Tell me Bartowski… tell me that you’re never going to get tired of looking out for me.”
Jeffrey squeezes his shoulder, “Or me Boss.” Chuck smiles and hugs her back.
Stephen steps over. “Folks, I haven’t had a chance to discuss this with you all yet. Um… it seems I was accepted into the master’s program at Northwestern. I was hoping I could stay at Casa Kozlowski while I’m there. I’d be happy to help out at the restaurant.”
Gretchen stares at Stephen, tears running down her face. Then at Jeffrey. “Baby, we’re going to have a house full of kids. Momma was right, God is smarter than me.” She jumps up and hugs Stephen then runs into the kitchen. Chuck’s smile fills his face.
Sarah is picking one of the turkeys up. She sees Gretchen running at her and quickly puts it back on the counter. Gretchen slams into Sarah hard and hugs her so tight Sarah gasps. “Sarah, I love you. You’ve brought so much joy to my life. I owe you so much. I’ll never be able to repay you.”
Sarah hugs her back. “You’re hugging the wrong Bartowski. This is all Chuck.”
“He got his hug and a few kisses. But you, you’re the one who brought him into my life. If you hadn’t backed me, he never would have brought me onto the team. Thank you.”
She releases Sarah and turns to Ellie. “You really trust me with Clara?”
Ellie looks at her like she’s crazy. “We trusted all the kids to you almost every summer. How is this different? Besides, as my brother likes to remind me, she is an adult. I like to believe we raised her right.” Ellie takes her in a hug. “Why wouldn’t I trust my sister?”
Gretchen sobs as she hugs Ellie, “I can’t believe this. I can’t believe I deserve this much love and happiness.”
Sarah pats Gretchen on the back. “We’ll get together and discuss what Alex taught me about that, later. Right now it’s all hands-on deck. We have a hungry family to feed. If we don’t feed them soon, we may have a mob on our hands. My guess is Captain Awesome will lead the raid on the kitchen.”
Ellie kisses Gretchen’s cheek. “Wish I could disagree with her. Devon is an eating machine. Let’s feed them. Plus I have lots to be thankful for, that
I want to share.”
The doorbell rings. Chuck gets up to answer the door. Two men dressed in black suits look into the house. “Can I help you gentlemen?” One of the men talks into his sleeve. Over his shoulder Chuck can see the door on a black SUV open. An older gentleman and woman exit and start up the path to the house.
Chuck’s eyebrows go up. “Holy shit!” He moves to run down the path. The two men grab him.
The man yells out, “Let him go gentlemen. He may have a few years on him, but he can still turn your wives into widows.”
They release Chuck and he runs down to hug the former president. “Frank, Joyce, how… what…?”
From behind him he hears Sarah laughing her brains out. “Did you think you’re the only Bartowski who knows how to surprise someone?” She runs down and takes Joyce in a hug. “I’m so glad you could make it. Come on in. We’re just about to sit down to eat.”
As they walk up the path, Joyce tells Sarah. “The boys are with their in-laws. Did you think I would miss a chance to see my favorite daughter.”
When the former president and first lady walk in the door followed by their security detail the whole room erupts in cheers. The former First Couple is surrounded and greeted with calls of Grandma Joyce, Grandpa Frank. Devon whispers to Morgan, “We’re never going to eat, are we?” Morgan shakes his head and laughs.
As they’re hugged over and over Frank turns to his detail, “Guys we’re safe here. You can relax.”
Chuck adds, “You’re welcome to join us, there’s plenty of food. You may have to squeeze in, but please join us.”
Frank hugs Chuck, “You heard the man. Tell the driver to come in too.”
The food is put out. Sarah shows off her knife skills on one turkey, while Gretchen carves the other.
The ooohs and ahhs fill the air as the group stuffs their faces. One by one they go around the table to tell what they’re grateful for. Finally everyone has spoken except for Chuck and Sarah. They stand up and put their arms around each other.
Sarah goes first. She looks at her assembled loved ones and sighs. “Who would have thought that I could have this much love and happiness. There was a time when I thought I didn’t deserve to be loved. I’m so grateful that you all proved me wrong. If I took the time to mention each of you that I cherish, and love and why, Molly would be a grandmother before I was done.” The family laughs.
“However, I do have to mention one person. A man who is no longer with us. His name was Bryce Larkin. I owe him so much. He brought into my life the man who changed everything. Charles Irving Bartowski. I love my husband and I am forever in his debt for bringing all of this love into my life.” I love you Chuck, thank you.”
Chuck wipes a tear from his eye. “I guess I owe Bryce as well. His role in my life was tumultuous to say the least. But thanks to him I have Sarah and all of you. I also want to mention all the people who passed through my life to make it better. John Casey, a friend who said more with a grunt than all my words could convey. I miss you my dear friend. My mom and dad, Mary and Stephen, you weren’t always there. But you gave me the best sister a man could have. Bea Sawyer, my office mom, grandma to my kids. Mom Emma who gave me two of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received, my Sarah and Molly. Diane and Roan Montgomery, family, and friends to the end. Momma and Poppa Kozlowski, Your love, and sweetness made our lives so much better.
You’re all gone from this earth, but you will never be gone from our hearts. We’ve told your stories to our children, and they will tell them to theirs.
Okay, okay I know Devon wants his dessert. I’ve talked enough.” The crowd laughs.
“Let me finish by thanking each and every person that shared our journey with us. Without you, there wouldn’t be an us. (he’s talking to my readers) Thank you all for your support and love. Happy Thanksgiving.”
